New Police Hairstyle Regulations on the Horizon

The Royal Thai Police are on the brink of implementing new hairstyle regulations, moving away from the traditional tight, three-sided haircut.

 

This update follows a draft directive, yet to be formalized, aiming to modernize and adapt police grooming standards to the contemporary scenario and diverse roles officers find themselves in today.

 

Archayon Kraithong, a spokesperson for the police, clarified that the National Police Chief, General Torsak Sukvimol, has not yet officially approved the modifications, reported Thai Rath.

 

These changes, expected to be announced soon, were conceived after the Chief’s field visits and discussions with subordinate officers. Their opinions and the context of their duties were instrumental in shaping the revised grooming standards, which are now under study for potential impacts.

 

The imminent directive has been spurred by an ongoing reassessment of the 2019 regulations, which strictly dictated male officers to maintain short, three-sided haircuts.

 

The proposed changes are expected to allow for more flexible grooming, with longer hair permitted at the top, while maintaining a professional appearance.

 

On October 11, 2023, Achayon confirmed that the circulating directive draft is not final. The anticipated official announcement will clarify the extent of the adaptations.

 

These changes are meant to align police grooming with operational situations and specific locations, ensuring that every officer, regardless of their assignment, benefits from this modernized approach.

 

While waiting for the official announcement, the force remains in eager anticipation, ready to embrace a transformation that mirrors the evolving landscape of policing in the 21st century.

 

The adjustments are seen not just as a mere change in grooming standards but a step forward in enhancing the adaptability and responsiveness of the Thai police force amidst diverse and dynamic challenges.

Undercover officers, RTP or ISOC were exempted from the haircut regulations.

Thai police let their hair down with 5cm rule revision

Thailand’s national police chief has instituted a revision in police regulations, permitting male officers to sport hair up to 5 centimetres long. This move is a marked difference from the 2018 uniform practice code which mandated that male officers maintain a closely cropped hairstyle with the back and sides of their heads completely shaven.

 

In the new 2023 uniform practice code, male officers now have the liberty to grow their hair up to 5cm on top of their heads. However, the hair on the sides and back of their heads must remain under 1cm in length.

 

Furthermore, Police General Torsak Sukvimol reported that the regulations now provide for police officers assigned to investigation, intelligence, narcotics suppression or those stationed in high-risk areas to opt for a high-fade haircut. This, however, requires prior approval from their superiors who hold the rank of superintendent or above.

Female officers with long hair haven’t been left out of these changes. They are required to secure their hair appropriately using a black hairpin.
