New urban noise problem

Featured Replies

On our estate the usual yapping dog problem has abated in recent times, owners have either moved or the dogs have died, one or two but not a major annoyance. About three months ago next door (not the owners they moved and relatives arrived) got a couple of roosters, I assume for fighting and betting on. Racket was horrendous so the mrs called the owner and she agreed they should not be there and they were taken away. Last weekend the damn things reappeared with the excuse not same birds this one not so noisy, but it is of course and more will probably turn up. Not wanting to live next to a farmyard and get woken up at 4am what to do? I think there are collars you can put on their necks to stop the racket but pretty sure they would say thats cruel, they live under a basket 24/7! Moobahn management are useless they will never say anything, killing it would not work as they would know we had done it. Seriously considering moving out after 11 years but the mrs would not. How people can be so inconsiderate here never ceases to amaze me

Feel for you.....step one is never, never buy in Thailand....only ever rent.

Unless the situation is resolved, moving is your only option (but rent if you do!!!).

It would have cost more to rent over the past 11 years than what this place cost, so thats not a problem. Would not buy again though, so many places are too difficult to sell, especially with farm yard animals next door!

Don't forget your lost opportunity of capital in your calculations......of course you could have lost the lot in a bad investment....555

Your problem is fixating on the rooster noise. If I can hear but ignore my wife's 6 am alarm clock I am sure you can ignore a rooster, eventually.🤔

But thats just once a day, imagine the alarm going off every few minutes, more annoying than dogs barking.

Maybe your moobahn has rules about keeping livestock🤔

Or get a few pet pythons and don't feed them for a few days.

Probably you know that already. If they are fighting chickens (or whatever they are called), then they are often treated by their owner and caretakers with a lot of care. They are not just chicken, they are treated like super-chicken.

So just in case you talk to them make sure you talk about those creatures with respect.

I don't know how much that helps. But I am sure if you just tell them to remove those annoying chicken or maybe slaughter and eat them that would probably not make the situation much better.

I just talked about that problem with my gf, her brother had chickens like that.

She said the good news is that mostly the chicken only make a lot of noise at certain times and not the whole day. The bad news is that one of those times is something like 5am...

Sorry, I have no tips how to solve that problem. Maybe play AC/DC all night and make sure you make more noise than those chickens or something like that.

This is one of the worst aspects of Thai culture, if you can call it that. Our best friends husband round the corner is obsessed with these fighting birds, about 6-10k each. He's lost 100k betting in one night before, almost ended in divorce. He had six in the garden ended up spending 6k a month just to get them put up in a shed, cares more about them than his two sons.

Restrict their headroom, if they can't stretch tall, they won't crow.

Just came to my mind: As far as I know these cock fights are illegal in Thailand. And obviously mostly nobody cares. But maybe there are some animal rights groups which decided to make life miserably for owners of those creatures. I wouldn't be surprised to find such group om the internet. Maybe you are lucky, and you can find someone else who fights for you.

Talk to the poo-yai baan of the moo-bahn you're in.

But - hate to say it - talk to those neighbours again first. After all, you'd like to resolve this without 'going higher', right?

Get the feeling you already know it's unwise to end up as enemies with these neighbours.....so do the right thing, as politely Thai as possible at  first.....and then if doesn't work....put some responsibility on those with immediate, local authority (like the pooyai baan) to sort it out.

Don't move house over this. (Btw....I've had very, very similar experiences.)

Didn't you build a house?

Yes.....wife did....all her money.....I spend as much time as possible doing house sits here and in the UK.

I very nearly left her when she told me she was having it built......until I realised it would save me about 80k a month if I stayed.....555

Make sure you take their collars off before they escape, so that no-one knows they are yours

Noise is a general issue for expats all over Asia.

Roosters

Wat announcement.

Village headman read the news.

Music played on the same speakers.

Motorcycles sales cart, pickups, .....

Loud music karaoke from early eve, to next morning.

Locals are half deaf (?), so its mostly we expats who notice, it seems.

For roosters extreme, try any place in Philippines!
