Dom, captain of Wild Boars football team, killed himself at school in UK

The captain of the Thai football team trapped in a cave for several days in 2018, took his own life while at school in the UK, a coroner has ruled, according to BBC.

 

Duangphet Phromthep was found unconscious at Brooke House College in Market Harborough, Leicestershire, on 12 February. He died two days later at Kettering General Hospital.

 

Following an inquest into the 17-year-old’s death, a senior coroner recorded a conclusion of suicide. In the record of inquest, Prof Catherine Mason said: “Mr Phromthep was not known to mental health services, and it is not known why he took the actions that he did.

 

“It could not have been foreseen or prevented. The police investigation has found no evidence of third-party involvement or suspicious circumstances.”

 

Known as Dom, he had previously gained worldwide fame as the captain of The Wild Boars football team, or Moo Pa in Thai. He and his teammates became trapped in caves after a sudden storm caused flooding which blocked the exit.

Perhaps he was homesick and felt out of place. Presumably he could phone home in his free time.

Maybe he realised he didn't want to be a footballer or study in England but felt he couldn't let people down.

Presumably there was no suicide note.

RIP Dom, it shouldn't have come to this.

I can understand and accept when adults commit suicide, but find it very sad when young people are so tormented that they end their own lives. They are way too young to die.

Might have been bullied at school despite his ordeal. Teens are nasty and jealous of each other. Empathy is not very widespread in the teen culture nowadays and add social media to the mix and ya got some pretty explosive crap.

The pressure on this kid had to be huge.

 

First, he was in an English school because of what happened to him.

 

He was away from home and the lifestyle he knew and loved.

 

The whole family and their lives rested on this young man getting them out of poverty.

 

He I ass u me that he was on a scholarship of some sort, so he had that pressure to keep up his grades as well as his football playing.

 

That is a lot for  kid and calling home is nice but it is still not the same.

I had heard about this earlier when it first hit the news.  A terrible and tragic end to this young student.  I feel very sorry for his family in Thailand.  May he RIP.

Very sad. I sincerely hope he wasn't being abused, as is so often the case in UK schools. I hope the police do a decent inquiry instead of just brushing it of with the "nobody could have foreseen..." comment, which looks like a cop out.

   His English speaking ability would have been basic and also his footballing ability would have been very basic  , British kids with footballing ability are often signed up to profession football clubs and train with them from aged 6 and develop from their .

   Its extremely  unlikely that he would have made it in a footballing career and he probably wouldn't even have been selected for the school football team  reserves

Plus institutionalised racism and xenophobia, "hazing" and "fagging", all considered normal in such schools. Just like here.

Who knows what goes through people's minds prior to these things happening. He had enough of this world for some unknown reason. Especially tragic when it is someone so young. Sympathy to his grieving family.

I think your comments may be based on zero knowledge of the school, it's pupils and it's "ethos".

 

It is a very International school ("British kids" only a fraction of pupils) that teaches English Secondary Curriculum with an emphasis on a specific area of endeavour.  In this case it's Sports.

 

In another world it might be Performing Arts or Technology.

 

That is typical of many English Secondary "Colleges".

This is an unforgiveable failure of guardianship allowing a young boy to become so desperate he took his own life. Given what he had been through and his background he had to have been seen as vulnerable. I hope someone is held to account for allowing this to happen.

Evidence please! That was one of the reasons he was attending the Football Acadamy in Leicestershire (UK) - a sad and bad choice of words for his family to read!

  He was attending the academy because he was part of the rescued cave boys , he wasn't there because of his footballing abilities 

   The owner of Leicester City football Club was Thai and that had some influence of him attending the Leicester football academy

With respect, why should you know as a member of the public. As a retired UK Police Forensic Scientist, I can say that such information is "confidential" and "kept on file". The relevent authorities will know what method he chose.

Well it wasn't exactly Eton so not sure about the fagging 😂.  However none of us know about his state of mind or what sort of pressures he was under.  Surely the school and his guardians should have been more responsible.  The school certainly has a duty of care and they have inhouse counselors to oversee the welfare of their students.  I hope they will be held to account for their obvious failings in this case.

To survive the odds of the cave rescue - and then take your own life, makes it even more tragic.

Here's a young rural Thai kid, who suddenly gets put under the glare of a global spotlight.

 

Then he is ripped away from his home, his family, his country and everything he has known before and is transported to a totally alien environment in terms of weather, language, food, and culture by unthinking do-gooders.

 

He could not let his 'benefactors' down, and it seems he couldn't stand the alien environment. Who on earth thought this was going to end well?

Hindsight is easy but I reckon you're on the right track. As someone said, Leicester City was owned by Vichai, multi millionaire, and probably he or his group saw this as a win, win. 

Give Dom a chance he could never have dreamed of, and at the same time burnish the name of Vichai, Kings Power and Leicester City.

As mentioned the school has many international students but I wonder if most are from wealthy families or at least the students have a strong English language background. 

Dom could have felt isolated and the weight on his shoulders from the expectations of the media, etc to succeed may have been overwhelming.

I am just curious.
When a foreigner (farang) decides to end their life by a big jump or by other means, the comments are closed automatically by AN.
Now we have a young Thai who APPARENTLY chose the same end and comments are left open for all the foreigners to speculate and comment on.
Not criticizing, simply raising the question about a double standard
