Who got bored in Thailand and went back?

So the question is please be honest ....how many of you  actually made the retirement to Thailand whether that be Pattaya or another place and ......ended up going back to your own country.... because of boredom OR it just wasn't what you imagined.

 

I believe a few Aussie guys on here  did.

now I just watched a YouTuber who after one year retirement in Pattaya is going back to Europe as he is bored in his one year retirement

 

in that one year he mentions everyday was the same ,he rented a studio in Central Pattaya , rose every morning, had his coffee on the balcony, went to the gym and the day became boring.

It wasn't the excited lifestyle he thought it would be

 

I was surprised there was nearly 100 comments from older guys who had taken retirement in Asia from Thailand to the Philippines and all said they were or had gone back to their home country

 

, all said they got bored ,life was boring there in retirement 

 

a few mentioned "heat" and they were not used to it everyday ,others mentioned traffic and noise etc but the main was boredom 

 

it's not always about financial reasons ,as I said these guys are cashed up retirees going back to their countries after a year or so 

 

I think they in reality once retired miss their routine, and how many of you say 6 months into retirement living into Thailand actually have thoughts of regret ?

Will never get bored of being able to swim in a warm climate every day of the year and will never get bored of 100b foot massages. Both of these highly desired activities/pleasures are not possible/affordable in the homeland so will never go back. 

And the thought of leaving my gorgeous (20 years younger than me) medical professional GF to look for a new, much older, less attractive GF back home is out of the question.

I've told this story before, and here is one more time - I got sick of Thailand, moved to Mexico, and was back in six weeks.

 

As far as going back "home," I visit family & friends in the US once or twice a year and am reminded why I don't live there any more. Bored I can tolerate, US BS I can't.

I think people shouldn't blame Thailand if the don't know what to do when they retire. It was their idea to have that drink on the beach...

I don't have an answer to above question but a comment about going back home.

I grew up in Central Europe and I decided to move to Thailand when I was 30. I was/am happy here and I didn't go back for 20 years.

And then I had to go back to my "home" for family reasons.

It was not all bad. But that's the best I can say. There wasn't one minute when I was "back home" that I thought about staying there.

It had obviously changed, but rarely to the better. 

 

To be fair, I met some interesting people back home who I didn't knew before. The communication was great with my mother language and same cultural background. I understand that people miss that when they come to Thailand.

Obviously, if we move then we must be open to meet new people, and not only pretty Thai girls.

The most boring time of my life was living in the UK, I left 50 years ago, first to Germany and then after retirement to Thailand, I've never been back. I live in a rural village here, something that the average falang would describe as boring but to me it's wonderful.. My treat is an hours walk at 4:30 am then to sit in meditation at the lake side and listen to the monks chanting in the nearby temple as the sun starts to rise over the rice fields and floods the ornate temple buildings with light, after 19 years here it is still an exotic experience.

So you must live in the North West of Thailand?

Is it the North East that is hot and dry ?

iMO, Life is what you make it. You do have to sit down and plan out your daily routine, set project days and events in the future. Aim at a comfortable level and adjust as you go along. I could not keep up rooting 5 times a day every day. So now I visit markets, fix the odd bit of electronics, watch a movie a week, and catch up with a friend. I bake a cake every month and try to annoy one person once a day on aseannow forum posts.

I'm slowly adjusting to what I'm seeing....

Except for the places we've planned to visit I can't wait to get back....

 

Side note - I'm amazed at the amount of senior citizens 70+ still out there working that apparently can't afford not to...Their golden years being winnowed away, stolen - sad to see.....

When I retire, I think I'd like to spend half the year back West (fishing, golfing, enjoying the seasons, people, and food) and half the year here (Thai massage, warm weather and general scallywag behaviour).

 

But who knows what my home country will look like in a few decades, probably the Middle East,  so maybe I'll just stay in good old Thailand all the time.

I get bored no matter where  live, and it's a challenge sometimes staying active in interested in TH, especially with so much time on my hands.  Hence why O&A so much, compared to some.   Living semi rural doesn't help, but only a few hours from interesting Krung Thep or landscape (southward).

 

Another thought, if bored and left TH, who would be reading to chime in with a comment?  One must really be bored where at now, if following forums about a country they no longer live in, or interest to visit again.

How the hell can anyone get bored in Thailand? So much to do every day. Dodging homicidal Thais on my scooter most days is definitely not boring.

 

OTOH, if I stay in Australia for more than a few weeks, I am reduced to watching reruns of Justified and Game of Thrones.

That's what I'm feeling currently. It may not be Thailand though, but rather just settling in too long, too comfortable of lack of challenge in a new environment. Or, just not comfortable being retired at all.

 

Any mention of being dissatisfied on this forum gets met with all kinds of attacks, usually of the "it's just you" variety, but it's the environment also.

22 years living in Thailand   married to a Thai lady for 15 of those years,  we  holiday in  the U.K.  every  3or 4 years, and have just returned form the latest holiday  of 5 weeks  there.

 

Due to  the weather, the  crazy  prices  of   1  pint of beer, and a beer shandy at  15 pounds ( not in central London) either  ++++   we will not be returning any time soon,   if ever.......I find it easier,  & more comfortable to  get cooled off  in Thailand, rather than  try get warmed up  in England....

I absolutely would not go back and live in the UK and sometimes wonder what kind of boring life i would have if i hadn't found Thailand 30 odd years ago. A recent trip back home confirmed to me that i am in the right place here. For all it's faults, Thailand is still a great place to live compared to a western country.

 

You do need to incorporate some routine into your life here which must include exercise. Drinking must also be limited, in fact staying out of bars altogether is probably the way to go. 

 

As for the ladies, i suppose it depends on if you like old and plump with attitude or younger and slim. I know which i prefer.

True that. My plan is to spend 6 months in each country but I do ask myself what I will do with myself for 6 months in Australia unless I travel around. Whereas I feel Thailand can fill my time much easier. Even a thai shopping centre seems more fun than an Australian one.

I dont think I would last a week in a ' Studio ' so fair play to the guy lasting a year.

 

Not really sure how one becomes bored in Thailand, unless you cannot make the effort to get off your ( deleted ) and go do things.

This is a great place to ponder expat life with other ponderers, BUT

 

If it is indeed not Thailand, then it must be some variation of "just you". Bad fit, or whatever.

it's both. the point is that it's not ideal for everybody and has a lot of negatives.
