Thailand on track to legalise same-sex marriage

The Marriage Equality Bill has been given the green light by the Thai Cabinet, as the country progresses towards the legalisation of same-sex marriage.

The Phuket Express reports that the draft bill was approved by Cabinet yesterday, November 21. If, as is likely, same-sex marriage is legalised, Thailand will become the third Southeast Asian country, after Taiwan and Nepal.

The Move Forward Party, which won the most votes in the May general election, but was blocked from forming a government, has long championed the bill. The bill passed its first parliamentary reading last year, but was stalled when parliament was dissolved ahead of the election.

Considering Thailands reputation for understanding mixed genders this has been a long time coming.

Presumably if passed, recognition will only be of same sex "partnerships/marriages" if one of the parties is Thai. For non-Thais who have legal recognition in other countries, the discrimination would still apply.

Beware of what you wish for my gay friends.  There's a price to pay if one enters a legitimate marriage.  No more fast tracking, poppers and bath houses for you my friends. Your mate must be all things to you.

Why would you presume that either way at this point?

People can live happily in relationships without a piece of paper.

Leave marriage to be between a real biological  man and real biological woman. :)

Yes and no.

There is a cultural tradition with katoeys but cisgender gays and lesbians are not as well accepted in Thailand as many westerners imagine. They see only the superficial.

Without the "piece of paper" one doesn't gets rights.  For example, if one's partner is dying one has no right to be consulted on medical treatment, and has no rights relating to disposal of the body.  Then there are other matters such as inheritance of one's partner's pension or adoption.  It may just be a "piece of paper", but it brings significant rights.

Same Sex Marriage?

How would that affect  a Foreign Woman marrying a Thai Woman

or a Foreign Man marrying a Thai Man when it comes to Visa extensions?

Who if anyone would have to show the money in the bank?

Who would be the Husband and who would be the Wife when dealing with Immigration.

At the moment a foreign husband has the show the 400k in the bank.

A foreign wife has to show nothing.

@Jingthing That is why I made my comment, as above. Until there is clarification, there are interalia tax implications that need to be addressed. The Thai RD are going to be confused enough by the new interpretations, since amended, and doubtless to be amended again.

I thought Thailand already allowed same-sex marriages...

great. now just get it over with and get on with more pressing issues.

So why can't a man marry 1 man and 1 woman or 2 women? To oppose it is bigotry.

You mean normal gay guys and lesbians. We don't need this cis nonsense.

I hope for our gay and lesbian friends, the Thai government doesn't change the law every 6 months like for the visas.

They have the same CHOICE.

A gay man can marry a women, the same as every other man.

A gay woman can marry a man, the same as every other woman.

Nope. Just talk normal.

Just now, Jingthing said:

Which is bigotry. Why cant you marry 2 or 3?

You start a lobby for that then. Off topic here.

Normal is a loaded word. The truth is we're all freaks in our own ways.

That wasn't a troll post, it was the post from a man who remained in a monogamous marriage for 16 years.

I don't know a single gay man who lasted 16 weeks in a state of monogamy, much less 16 years.  It's bloody hard, as any man who has been through it can tell you.

My gay acquaintances wanted the benefits and status that accompany marriage, but then for the institution to accommodate their polyamourus lifestyle.  That's why no sober person can call a gay union a "marriage" with a straight (no pun intended) face.  A gay man understands marriage about as well as I understand the San Francisco bath house scene, which is not at all.

Gay people are not a monolith any more than other people.
