State of the Forum and its Direction

The comparison with the Vietnam war was demonstrative of the team player mindset I was objecting to. It is possible to object to one's own country's involvement in a war without being a traitor.

Oh, it's just objecting to any team player, or not team player, mindset not your own on any particular issue (about which you're typically misinformed from leftist media), including mere common sense.

It's surprisingly difficult to find vids showing the extent of the decline of conditions in the UK, Europe, and the USA on youtube, owing to policies of cancellation and censorship. But I can't be bothered to look up them on more liberal (in the classical sense) sites. In fact they might be cancelled here on the forum as well, unless perhaps showing the chaos, poverty, and squalor in the USA, owing to our anti-Americanism.

With that, I'll stop wasting time with you.

How many people expect factual information on this site? Ok, in a few sub-forums like DIY or something there might be a useful answer. But mostly I have no high expectations from this forum.

The subject of this thread is the State of the Forum and its Direction. It is not about the Vietnam War, it is not about Karl Marx, it is not about the Greens and all their policies, including transexuals in libraries ,gay marriage, immigration, close the immigration detention centres , lowering the age of homosexual consent or anything else that occurs to you.!

Please stay on topic.

Love Yellowtail because he's a rare righty who can at least crack an occasional joke.

Amusement trumps seriousness. No wait, I need a different word.

Some clarification please I do want anyone to think I am trolling them (whatever that is) I use the laugh emoji to express the notion that I find the post funny, humerous, clever.

That's what it means to me and I have to say I do not like words (or emojis) being hijacked.

Many years ago the word "gay" meant happy, full of fun  - today it means something completely different (not that I think "gay people" can't be happy or full of fun).

So take note - if I do a "laugh" emoji in your post it means I found it funny, humerous or clever not that I am trolling you!

I think we'll have to Biden our time on that!

How do we know if that laugh emoji comes from you?

I use the laugh emoji for the same purpose sometimes. Other times, it just means that the post was so idiotic as to be laughable. On some occasions it's laughing at the poster for inflicting himself with some preventable issue, social Darwinism in action.

What could possibly Trump that comment?

When was this? When Cole Porter had radio hits?

Yes and I used to listen to Dick Barton Special Agent on the radio long before the new fangled thing called television arrived.

You jealous of those uncomplicated times?

I made not have been clear. I am talking about the site more broadly and whether serious posts have a place or whether the aim should be entertaining and provocative.

First I noted the news topics which the poster discussed.

Then about his comment about the need for provocative or interesting posts and, when I think of that type of thing, I think of topics such as in the Pub that can seem less shocking now - they can be entertaining, or sometimes sad, or a bit tiresome. I am not commenting on the politics of mongers though sometimes it is interesting to see how they deal with both - such as yourself where your posts could seem like two different people but all good.

Seems to me that some posters are so committed to THEIR outlook on life that they can't tolerate those that have a different opinion, and just have to slag them off, rather than moving on.

As for posters being "two different people", it's OK for humans to hold apparently opposing viewpoints. I've noticed that some posters that have similar views on some subjects to myself have opposing views on others.

I too, have conflicting opinions eg I am socialist and want to tax millionaires till they squeal, but support Trump ( mostly ).

I do wish that some posters would stop considering that their opinion is the only one that matters and carry on a campaign of harassment against any that have different opinions.

IMO the world was a better place back then, at least for us western people.

Funniest post of the week.

Now you support Trump, after telling us you did not. I use your own words below.

It is you that thinks only your opinion counts, you ignore the truth and facts, then just post IMHO, and put anyone who does not agree with you on ignore. Your seem to have no one to talk to in real life, as every morning you fill this site with 20 to 30 posts of your one side world view, no wonder this site is going down hill.

You have a fragile ego, and your only consistency is being inconsistent. As you admitted in your own words you have issues.

So you're like 120 years old?

I hadn't heard the gay means jolly thing since the mid-70's.

Are you an ancient English drunk? If so, I love you. This is the kind of cheery dross I spent a many a lost afternoon in a timbered pub laughing directly at.

ThaiBeachLover wants to party like it's 1929.

Then again, a hooker only cost a quarter back then. And he's like a hooker-seeking missile.

Prob no anal tho. He'd prob have to wait another half century to get in there.

How did that epiphany come about? Was there a member's meeting where you had to say something like, "Hello, I am @KhunLA and I'm an ignore button abuser."?

I'm the op in this thread, which I wrote before I became a Moderator, hence I did so with only one view. Now, two months on, I have seen both sides.

What I wrote initially was that, "both parties have to act sensibly and reasonably". I'm certain now that the Moderation side does that, in fact, I'm very surprised at the lengths it goes to accommodate all types and to be fair and my hat is off to the degree of professionalism involved. Individuals do not act unilaterally, all key decisions affecting posters are discussed at length and everyone's views are sought. It's a far harder role than I would ever have imagined, ten or twenty times harder, it's frequently draining at times. Do moderators make mistakes? Of course we do, frequently, we're only human also!

But parts of the posting community can be a real challenge, it must be something like 95% are fine, 95% of the time but 5% are fine only 70% of the time. It can be stunning to witness some of the petty arguments that result in significant conflict between posters, I often think if they could only see themselves from a different perspective they would be embarrassed and horrified. There are of course the types who dislike any form of perceived authority and those who think that free speech means they can say whatever they want, in any way they want, but hey, it takes all types.

Probably the biggest problem that exists is that very few people have read the rules, I know I didn't for years and it's only since I started in this role that I have paid serious attention to them. Please, do everyone a favour and read them because it's the framework in which we operate.

I just did for the first time since arriving here 2 years ago. Now I know why I can't post links to certain sites.

I read them many years ago, and if posters abided by them it would be a much more pleasant forum than it is.

Especially the rule about posting links.

The issue I had with the rules were how asymmetrically they were applied. Many of the rules are very subjective and have been horribly abused.

Ah the rules. Yes we have become a society that requires constant rules and strict enforcement of said rules.

What have you done lately to buck that trend?

OK, no skin off my nob. But before you go, do you think that all those years of nurturing a forum ignore list is why you have no sense of humour?

It was an attempt to create some parameters but without defining every phrase and circumstance and writing War and Peace. Inevitably, there will be some subjectivity. But I would trust the current crew of Moderators to use good judgement in that respect and I'm not usually known for my trust of such things..

Well, so far, so good...
