Passenger complaint turbulence as Thai Airways appears to plot sky-high Dreamliner expansion
by James Morris and Son Nguyen

There was a spot of passenger complaint turbulence at the end of the week as Thai Airways continued its strong recovery under Chief Executive Officer Chai Eamsiri. With impressive third-quarter profits and flight numbers, the airline was reported by Reuters to be looking at a huge ฿840 billion deal for Boeing Dreamliner planes. However, a hot coffee scalding incident on one flight and a disgruntled Business class passenger dampened the atmosphere as the airline was forced to issue apologies and clarifications.

High-flying Thai Airways began the week eyeing an ambitious ฿840 billion deal for 80 Boeing Dreamliners, signalling a grand comeback from bankruptcy. Amid robust financial gains disclosed in its recent third-quarter financial report, two PR disasters struck the airline. A severe coffee scalding incident and a Business Class downgrade causing a formal passenger complaint, sparked online outrage leading to apologies and clarifications.

High-flying Thai Airways which while still operating under the protection of Thailand’s Bankruptcy laws since May 2020, was reported this week to be looking at a staggering deal to purchase 80 Boeing Dreamliner jets in a lofty deal that could be worth ฿840 billion. However, the airline led by Chief Executive Officer Chai Eamsiri, ended the week buffeted by turbulence with two public relations disasters caused by disappointed passengers.

Thai Airways, the national carrier with a robust financial recovery on track since its bankruptcy in May 2020 was this week reported to be dreaming of acquiring 80 Boeing 787 Dreamliner jets in a potential ฿840 billion deal, has been hit with two public relations disasters that have garnered significant media attention.

The passenger would be rich in the U.S.:

According to a jury's verdict in 1994, Stella Liebeck from Albuquerque, New Mexico was granted $2.7 million in punitive damages and $200,000 for the third-degree burns she endured when coffee she purchased from a McDonald's drive-thru spilled on to her

he should sue the a_se off them .....

' medical treatment process and medical expenses '    so they'll pay for his pharmacy cream and a fruit basket   !!

The Thai way ....

Make a note, Thai, an airline that actually serves coffee that is hot!

Unlike the lukewarm dish-water you get on BA.

"I don't want to know why you can't. I want to know how you can!"

Looking at the torso and arms , that doesn't half look like sunburn.

Another PR issue from a large corporation that should have handled this properly so that it didn't even become news. It never ceases to amaze me how companies allow an issue like this to even become news. The crew should have assisted immediately with sensitivity, offered all medical assistance and handed this over to a dedicated customer relations team who could offer compensation (such as a free future flight, upgrade or even refund). At least this is how we handle our business. Negative stories and reviews do put others off of using a company and potentially cause losses. The way I look at it is that if a customer has not paid for poor service or has an issue, then they are unlikely to complain or leave a bad review if they feel fairly treated. Works for us.

I think there's some miscommunication involved ....

The guy said where's my coffee .....

not ...   I'll wear my coffee

Pleased they accept responsibility for this incident without doing the normal Thai thing and trying to blame someone else.

Now I just want them to admitt they are doing the wrong thing and keeping my flight money for four years and two months instead of quoting bankruptcy for the delay in returning my hard earned cash.

I assume the next passenger said no to coffee

I've always wondered about hot coffee/tea on planes. Also cup noodles with boiling hot water. Always seems like an accident waiting to happen. I'll stick with a can of beer or two.
