Politics New Cabinet Revamp: Pheu Thai Gears Up After Bhumjaithai Exit
In this photo released by Thailand's Government Spokesman Office, Thailand's Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra arrives at Government house in Bangkok, Thailand, Monday, June 23, 2025. (Thailand's Government Spokesman Office via AP) BANGKOK – Deputy Prime Minister Phumtham Wechayachai announced today that the final line-up for the Paetongtarn Cabinet is expected to be finalised this week. Following the Bhumjaithai Party’s withdrawal, eight Cabinet positions remain open, with speculation rife about which portfolios Pheu Thai will seize, notably the influential Interior Ministry. Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra met with coalition leaders to discuss the vacant seats, previously held by Bhumjaithai, now likely to be claimed by Pheu Thai. Though Phumtham remained tight-lipped on the specifics, it’s anticipated that Pheu Thai will gain significant ministerial roles. Currently the Defence Minister, Phumtham, neither confirmed nor denied potential reassignment to the Interior Ministry. Deputy Prime Minister Phumtham Wechayachai. Picture via ThaiPBS Amid rumours of his possible shift, Phumtham clarified that his presence at the Interior Ministry meeting was solely in his capacity as Deputy Prime Minister overseeing security. He downplayed speculation about Deputy Defence Minister General Natthapon Nakpanich being promoted to his current post. Phumtham criticised Bhumjaithai’s past management of the Interior Ministry for not effectively implementing policies. He expressed confidence that Pheu Thai’s stewardship will advance grassroots economic initiatives, address drug-related issues, and enhance border security. Pheu Thai’s regained control is expected to re-energise key government policies. With objectives firmly focused on execution, the party aims to enhance overall government performance and policy adherence. Adapted by ASEAN Now from The Thaiger 2025-06-24 -
