Popular Post Grandpa Cool Posted January 31 Popular Post Posted January 31 I was "backpacking" around the world back in the early to mid 70s before it was called backpacking. My greatest fear was running out of money. However, unforseen circumstances lead to me running out of money a few times. In India, in Holland and in Singapore. I won't elaborate on the circumstances, but I would like to say that I got through these difficult circumstances through the kindness of strangers and I have always felt a deep thankfulness and genuine appreciation for those good souls who chose to help me both in cash and in kind. Later in life I had developed work and business skills that generated employment and millions of dollars. I have never forgotten those hard times and the help I was given and I've endeavoured to show kindness in it's many manifestations as life goes by. It's up to us to make this world a better place. There must be a lot of troubled souls on this forum, judging by the cynical, uncharitable, self centred unkind comments. 2 2 3 1

Popular Post malthebluff Posted January 31 Popular Post Posted January 31 Why is this news? WW3 about to start and people concerned about giving food to a foreigner. I think it's the racist jealousy that most thai have that's made it news, it's up to the vendor and nothing to do with anybody else 1 2 2

I have been backpacking around as well in my younger days and recognize and lived about the same sorry as you had. Had the honor to meet some of the most generous people on earth in those times....learned a lot on those voyages. 1 2 1 1

Welcome to the small minority of those people who care about other people. Ignore the majority of the me, me, me mob who only care about themselves. If they ridicule us, simply laugh at the and their mean spirited attitudes, but save a little pity for them as well. There is a French proverb that says « le ridicule ne tue pas » "The ridicule doesn't kill" which means, don't let the fear of ridicule stop you from doing what you want, or what you think is good !! 1 1 1 1
zhounan Posted January 31 Posted January 31 Thais who think the world is Tokyo, Seoul, Singapore and Hong Kong could not understand what backpacking is even if they went through another 10 cycles of samsara. 1 1

Other than... what people are putting on the internet (TikTok) for attention these days is simply astonishing... ... Its more astonishing that it draws comment.... and there I go, adding to the ridiculous BS with my own comment... oh no, I am now a netizen !!!... My thoughts exactly...... Sometimes I kick myself for not simply ignoring certain threads. However, I would refute the suggestion that all backpackers are stupid. In my youth I travelled the Greek Islands with a backpack staying in cheap "Pensions" and eating in cheap local cafes - over several years' trips I managed to visit many of the islands in the Cyclades group, plus quite a lot of others. It can be fun and educational at 19-23, NOT so much once you get older and accustomed to creature comforts. 2 1 1

Western penniless low life's should not be scratching around street food vendors for scraps, disgraceful, this woman has no self respect or for Thais. What makes you think smelly penniless backpackers have seen more than me? the thought of them having sex is rather unpleasant! Do you think they get free condoms as well? Fairynuff Posted January 31 Posted January 31 I sometimes wonder what’s made these grumpy old men so nasty, or have they always been like this? When I was a teenage backpacker I met some incredibly nice and kind people all over the world. They were kind, interesting and interested and went out of their way for us. Probably the best thing I learned was to be like that myself. 1 1

What makes you think smelly penniless backpackers have seen more than me? the thought of them having sex is rather unpleasant! Do you think they get free condoms as well? So in your view, every single one of the hundreds of thousands (perhaps millions) of backpackers that come to Thailand every year are just 'smelly' and/or 'penniless'? I backpacked though Thailand in the late 90's and met literally thousands of fellow backpackers and I can usure you your 'insights' couldn't be further from the truth. Granted a few I met were on tight budgets but I never met a single person who was penniless and none of them were smelly. Even this young lady looked well groomed and how do you know she was penniless? As the article says, she thought the food was just leftovers so asked if she could have it, possibly thinking it was just going to go to waste. You views are myopic, uncharitable and by comparing people to soi dogs, wildly inappropriate. Perhaps you should take a few months out, exploring this fantastic country with just a back-pack and a sense of adventure. You'll see you are very wrong and it may even have the added benefit of mellowing you out a bit. 1 2

She may have been robbed , lost her ATM card in a machine or there may have been some other reason . She only asked whether she could eat some left over food , lucky for her there were no ASEANOW forums members watching her, they would have chased her off and told her to starve 1 1 1

The post is about these types of visitors not the annoying ones you see on tik tok with enough money for toasted sandwiches from 7/11 and revolting Pad Thai they never stop going on about, or acting like lunatics at that ghastly full moon party. As a whole back packers are pests when on transport and in shops, they never seem to realise those stupidly large rucksacks actually inconvenience other people, why cant they use suitcases like the rest of us? cdemundo Posted January 31 Posted January 31 I'm not fond of backpackers, maybe I've just met the wrong ones. Anyway, this story brings to mind a sign outside a condo in my neighborhood: "Please don't feed the pigeons." 1
Surasak Posted January 31 Posted January 31 A serious loss of face for a foreigner! Her next move could well be a Go Fund Me page? 1 1

You're just a bundle of joy now aren't you? I take it you were never young and just went straight from birth to being a miseble old s0d? Time to up the meds me thinks before your head explodes with all the 'inconvenience'. Oh, and by the way, ever tried lugging a suitcase up a mountain or through a jungle? A lot easier with a rucksack. 1 1
steven100 Posted January 31 Posted January 31 A question ...... how will she pay her rent ? doesn't she have other backpacker friends that can help her financially ? how will she pay for her meals tomorrow and the next day ? it just doesn't add up .... 2 1
