If I asked you from whence you were, do you think it would wind you up into an apoplexy of self-righteousness?

I wasn't going to reply to this OP first but here we go.

Son of a single mum who worked of her backside just to feed me.

No WC just outside dunny.

No toilet paper (Bum gun did not exist) just newspaper.

No fridge, no hot water system, no TV

First bike second hand

Bought my first calculator at 14

Walked to school in winter (about 4 km)

I could go on and on I rather have my life at it is today.

Me ... my youth sucked more than it didn't.  Only started enjoying everyday after around 23 yrs old.   Had a lot of fun, but a lot of struggles, most revolving around being poor.

Something I definitely don't do, is reminisce about my pre 23 yr old days, except the sex.

At first I thought you got sucked then realising your using 1980"s slang  ?😳but you don't live in the past right

Because times change.  Our parents in the 70s/80s wished life was like the 50s/60s.

I wish life was like the 50s/ 60s.

No mobiles, no PCs, not much tv worth watching ( with some exceptions ), and most importantly, no means for the nasties to disturb me with that vile noise young people like to play far too loudly these unpleasant days, better music, people could actually dance properly, greed didn't reign supreme like now.

I'm not saying it was perfect- it definitely wasn't, but it was way better than now, IMO.

I hope you do realise that for many people on the planet NOW, life is as bad or worse than what you had.

Seems to me we gave away a better life ( as a society ) for toilet paper and car windows that work with a button. We had less back then but were a more compassionate and less aggressive society.

IN NZ a murder was huge news because they happened so rarely, parents didn't beat their children to death, gangs didn't sell drugs to school kids and I could go out all day without my mother calling the cops to look for me.

Are we better off now when kids can stay all day in their room looking at porn on the internet?

Nah, ain't got the extra brain cells to waste, and only a passing thought when someone mentions it.  Helps appreciate the 'now'.

What doesn't kill you, makes you stronger.  Don't think about the negatives, only think and smile about the sex.  And amaze myself on how I survived all the stupid sh!t I did :cheesy:

Don't need a shrink, or to get shrunk about any of it.  No need for the 'blame game' for 'my oops' along the way.  Live with my choices, thankfully, most of them good.

More fun just enjoying everyday.

  • 2 weeks later...

I don't think it's that much different today than it was in the past.

If I think of my childhood, life was tough money short, my parents were both farm workers, long hours, little money.

But they figured it out.

During school vacations i cooked them their lunches, they would probably be charged with child abuse now for letting a 12 year old home alone use a gas stove!

When my kids were little, me and my ex figured it out too.

I worked a night shift and she worked days so we could take care of them.

Today with my grandkids, my son and daughter have both figured it out how to take care of the kids, work and give my grandkids a good life.

I don't think there ever was some golden age, it's just the human condition, that we sorta muddle though and make it work, and at the end of the day, and most of us at least end up as decent adult human beings
