Farang hit and run kills this women's son. Looks like he's 100% to blame but notice how they use the #Farang hashtag and highlight the fact it was a foreigner. ThaiRath TV has endless stories like this (the other day a drunk kid hit 4 cyclists killing 2 of them) but they don't put up the photo like this ever. Reminds me of Travon Martin, Americans will know.

It's not looking like a good time be a Farang in Thailand!

Can't see what happened on the video. Yes, the headline at the top of the video says "farang" which I find surprising, to my knowledge they used to use the proper word for foreigner in official news reports. Otherwise, there isn't any particular stigmatisation of the guy in the report, just (understandable) exasperation at the fact that he just said "sorry" repeadedly before speeding off without assisting and the boy died.

Yeah, it is very very sad, but the video doesn't show what happened.

If he was in a collision he should have stopped, but other than that we don't see what happened. But if he was saying "sorry" and then sped off it doesn't sound good..

Looking at the video, while you cannot see the point of impact, it appears that the car just drifted off the road to the left and collided with Oat, killing him. Did the driver fall asleep? And then the vehicle veers off to the other (wrong) side of the road. At the very least, the driver should be charged with negligent driving causing death. It might not have been intentional.

It appears the foreigner was a 60-year old German and he fled from his home following the accident.

Police went to his home the next morning to investigate and breath-tested the driver then but by then it showed no alcohol....which is hardly unexpected as it was the next day.

Be good, be respectful, and you are very welcome here.

There was no reason at all to bring up that story, the only thing remarkable about it was that it was a non-Thai involved. The crying story of the mom at the beginning shows they're trying to stir up emotions. It's easy to see how this could impact the rest of the expats  if it keeps going this way.

The German man seems guilty to me but there's very little information to go on. The news channel seems to be inflaming tensions by reporting this story at all. Their video is not complete and it's totally unremarkable compared to the endless other traffic fatalities they post. For example these in the last couple days.

They have this one on video. Killed two people. Drunk.

This guy didn't die but it's all on camera. Hit an old man trying to cross the road at a designated crossing.

It is a bad day for a hit and run, which is a criminal offence.

I talk to 2 taxi drivers every day, going to work and coming home.

In the last few days since the Swiss kicking incident on driver was on a frenzied yak about the Swiss guy.

But he didn't generalize about all farangs.

He was the only one who brought it up, everyone else the usual "hot today chai mai?" or "you like Thai women" or

"you're an American? New York or Los Angeles?"

For as long as I remember, Thai's have always been xenophobic, they tolerate us because they think we are all rich!

Have you seen any specialists about your insecurity? Maybe something to with feeling inadequate, or maybe not being rich?

Sure but this is going to upset lots of people and we have to go in to public with strangers. The American equivalent of this news story would be something like:

"Negro man hits and kills white women's son. #Negros"

That's literally what this national news channel did. It's pretty crazy actually if you can wrap your head around it. That's going to inflame tensions if you ask me.

Why are you projecting your anxiety?

Exactly as I see it... I don't see any anti-'farang' stigmatisation in this report at all...   Its just reporting on an event, whereby it so happens that the driver is Foreign.

My Wife showed me the video for the drunk driver (Thai) killing two morning cyclists in DUI incident...  the drunk driver just swerved, mowed the middle two riders down (killing them) and the front and rear rider (of the 4) were not hit.

When the only video's Thai's show us are only of Foreigners doing something wrong, then we'll know there is some underlying stigmatisation of 'Farangs'... until then...   I think this is just, news.

I expect a little 'excess media attention' against 'Farangs' as all sources now have their 'flavour of the month' attention grabber, but that will wear thin soon enough... Expected at about Songkran time, when all the Thai's are killing each other on the roads (until another DUI Westerner kills a Thai).

"Farang" does not imply the same thing as "negro" would in a Western news report. It is a colloquial term, and while it can have derogatory undertones in some contexts, it is generally not used to belittle foreigners.

On a more general note, I do expect that the very nationalist Thais will grow increasingly irritated at the political endeavour to "blend" Thailand in the global market as the current PM is intent on doing ("increased cooperation with the EU", easing visa processes, boosting tourism in the country…). This is likely to cause friction.

This xenophobic racism is on its very best way to get completely out of control. Thailand might have to be reminded, that they are walking a very, very, very tight rope here.

Irrespective of nationality, race, religion, gender etc. - everybody is equal in the eyes of the law. So treat everyone equally. Anything wrong, file a complaint, take it to court, get a court ruling and execute the verdict = simple as that.

But maybe some people are more equal than others?

Do never forget, the percentage of non-Thais doing wrong is marginal compared to the semi divine Khon Thai with all this petty crime, raping, mishandling of children by parents, relatives and teachers etc. etc. etc. - and hardly anything gets reported. So beware that this Farang-bashing will backfire as every farang moved once in their lives already ........ and can move away somewhere else to spend their money. As said, leave it to the police and courts and keep the manhunting media out of it. The average Thai is not educated enough to read between the lines and see the difference!

I can notice slight changes when driving in the less tourist parts on my motorbike, specially among older Thais, it's like they are checking me out again as if it was the first time they saw a foreigner, as it is exactly that generation watching the Thai news all day long too.

Like everything is just fine, but you can tell that they are like checking you out to see if you are one that might cause trouble. They need to stop this news bs.

Ok it's in Thai so it's easy to miss but the title has the word Farang and there is a #Farang hashtag in the YouTube video also. I should have put this in the original post but it would be something like "Negro man hits and kills white women's son. #Negros" in an American context. It's pretty shocking for a national news channel if you ask me.

Negro was a commonly used term up until the 60s. It's like Gringo with the Mexicans. I think it's still pretty similar. Personally I'm ok with it but that all depends on how it's being used.  That hit and run was nothing remarkable so it was noteworthy they put the Farang part so front and center.

I agree and rightfully so. Many areas of Thailand have been ruined by mass tourism so I expect some blowback.

As an aside on the "farang" word. Most commonly they do in fact use the more technical word for foreigner so saying "farang"  has a different implied tone to it I think. They may have been saying that too but used the word farang in the thumbnail and the #farang hashtag.
