Add insults to injuries -- some of the dumbest details about Trump's ruinous tariffs
A conservative think tank found the White House measured retail price elasticity when it should have used import price elasticity. That mistake meant the tariff outputs were about four times higher than they should have been. The correct version of the formula uses price changes in the cost of imports, meaning how much it costs a U.S.-based company to buy a good from a foreign seller. Instead, the White House factored in the retail price change, which is what consumers pay. Thus Cambodia’s 49% rate would drop down to 13%, and Vietnam’s would decrease from 46% to 12.2%. The vast majority of countries would end up being subject to the 10% tariff minimum that is part of the White House’s new policy. Trump’s tariff formula used the wrong value in its calculations, conservative think tank says. ‘This whole thing was rigged’ -

Armed Malaysian Robber Steals 184 Baht Weight in Gold from Hat Yai Store
Picture captured from CCTV and courtesy of Kaoded. A lone gunman made off with 184 baht in gold jewellery, worth more than 9 million baht, after brazenly robbing a well-known gold shop in the heart of Hat Yai city on 8 April, just before noon. At approximately 11:55, Pol. Lt. Sathaporn Suksawang of Hat Yai Police Station received a report of an armed robbery at Thai Udom Gold Shop 2 on Montri 1 Road in central Hat Yai. He promptly informed senior police officers, including Pol. Col. Thammarat Phetnongchum, Superintendent of Hatyai Police, and Pol. Col. Sakda Charoenkul, Deputy Commander of Provincial Police Region 9, who arrived on the scene with investigative teams. Upon arrival, police found shaken staff members and four gold trays scattered across the shop’s showcase area. Witnesses reported that a man, believed to be around 50 years old and wearing a cap to conceal his identity, entered the shop while employees were serving customers. Staff requested that he remove his cap as per shop policy, but instead, the suspect displayed a handgun, causing panic. One staff member quickly triggered the shop’s alarm system while others fled to the back of the store. Taking advantage of the chaos, the robber grabbed four trays of gold jewellery, placing the items into a backpack before calmly walking out of the shop. He then made his escape on a red Honda Dream motorcycle with Yala province registration plates, parked about 30 metres away. Preliminary reports confirmed that a total of 184 baht in gold was stolen, comprising: • 21 one-baht gold necklaces • 30 two-baht gold bracelets • 20 two-baht gold necklaces • 21 three-baht gold bracelets The combined value of the stolen jewellery exceeds 9 million baht. Police reviewed CCTV footage from the area, which lies within Hat Yai’s busy municipal centre. Investigators report that the robber is a Malaysian man named Mr. Yi Bun Long, 61 years old, with police offering a 100000 baht reward for information leading to his capture. Mr. Yi Bun Long had previously used a gun to robbed another gold shop, which was located opposite the scene of today’s incident on January 6, 2017. At that time, he stole 31 gold necklaces, weighing 115 baht, worth over 2.3 million baht. He was eventually arrested and was only released from prison a little over a year ago. -- 2025-04-09 -

Two 13-Year-Old Boys Drown in Swimming Incident at Loei Weir
Picture from responders. A day of play ended in heartbreak after two 13-year-old boys drowned while swimming in a weir in Wang Saphung district, Loei province. The incident unfolded in front of horrified friends and others, who could only watch as rescue teams battled currents and rain to recover the boys’ bodies. Police Lieutenant Nathakamon Thaoklang of Wang Saphung Police Station received the distress call at around 15:30 on 7 April. Emergency services, including local disaster prevention officers and volunteers from the Sawang Kheereetham Rescue Foundation, rushed to the scene at the rubber weir on the Loei River, located in front of the revered Chao Pho Si Songkhram shrine. At the scene, clothes and mobile phones belonging to the boys were found on the riverbank. Rescue divers began searching the deep, fast-flowing, and murky waters despite persistent rain. At approximately 17:00 the body of Attaphan, aged 13, was recovered and brought ashore, where his grieving mother and family waited in anguish. Rescue operations intensified with the arrival of more volunteer divers. At around 19:30, the body of the second victim, Ekaphon, also 13, was recovered. A surviving friend, Noppamongkol, also 13, recounted the harrowing events. He explained that four boys had come to play in the water that afternoon. While one stayed near the bank, the others, including the two victims, jumped into the deep waters near the top of the weir. Neither of the deceased boys could swim. As they struggled, Noppamongkol cried for help, attracting the attention of a nearby group of teenagers who managed to save him, but were too late to rescue the others. -- 2025-04-09
