Thailand expert Dan reveals there are 2 million expats living in Thailand

Recommended Posts

I remeber reading this helpful link from Mike about a month back.

He informed us there were about 312,000 expats.

But Thailand expert Dan is claiming there are 2 million expats in his famous vlog.

Who has it right? Dan or Mike?

They are both wrong.

As of the first quarter of 2023, the number of western expatriates in Thailand was 156,596 - with more than half living in Bangkok, according to Colliers Thailand and the Employment Department.

2 millions is probably the number of foreign workers regardless of where they come from.

Thailand doesn't publish statistics on expats, but this number sounds reasonable. In 2018 they published that 80k retirement visas were issued, after covid there are probably less of us.

My money would be on neither!  Nor Colliers Thailand or the Employment Department.

2 Million sounds like a lot. Too much in fact. That would be equivalent to about 3% of the Thai population. 300K also sounds too low. 750K sounds more credible. Maybe 250K Chinese. Perhaps 150K Japanese. 50K Indians. 100K Russians and the rest a broad mix.

What about Laos, Cambodia and Burma?

Plenty of them working in Thailand.

" IOM estimates that Thailand is home to 3.9 million migrant workers from Cambodia, the Lao People's Democratic Republic, Myanmar and Viet Nam (2019)."

https://thailand.iom.int/labour-mobility-and-social-inclusion#:~:text=In countries of destination%2C migrant,and Viet Nam (2019).

Some claim expat = white person, migrant worker = non-white.

https://theconversation.com/whats-the-difference-between-a-migrant-and-an-expat-69265

Others claim you need to be working in a foreign country in order to be classed as an expat.

And yet others claim

expat = person from a wealthy country working in a poorer country

Migrant worker = person from a poor country working in a wealthier country.

What is your definition of an expat ?

There are 3 to 4 millions foreigners living in Thailand.

Most of them ain't westerners.

Do they qualify as expats nonetheless or are they in the "migrants" category ?

No, Dan was not referring to the 3 million migrant workers from Laos, Cambodia and Burma.

I don't think so...that's why he is massively inflating the numbers of his potential audience.

Very good point.

Please don't use Facebook links, only people with Facebook accounts can view it !

I apologise for that Charlie.

If anyone knows how to post the video they are welcome to do it.

I tried, but failed.

How do you know that. Did you ask him face to face?
