I think there're trying to stop what the people want and that was Mr Pita as PM after all 95% of the people voted for him didn't they??? With people like Taksin coming back and facing absolutely nothing of a prison sentence and walking Scott free and red bull boy doing the same maybe it's time this corrupt money machine is brought to a hault

A perfectly obvious PRACTICAL measure would be to ban ALL military formations, barracks and military equipment (trucks & tanks) from coming within 400 or 500 km of the national capital. The only military in the capital would be HQ staff.

A similar rule applies in even in little ol' democratic Oz. With special provision under the Constitution for the use - approved by the Head of State (ie Gov-Gen) - of the (unarmed) military to assist police in national emergencies (eg earthquakes, floods, bushfires).

In any other country, the army is the executing arm of the legislative - called the government. So, if a colonel goes apes1h4t, then you could nail him for treason, unless the government managed to sneak through the backdoor of the government house due to a botched election. Treason stands for การทรยศ and, in many countries, will result in losing the nationality or a hefty decades-long jail sentence.
Those who disagree with the government to that extent usually seek political asylum elsewhere ........

Is that intended to apply to "any "commander or just the unapproved ones ?

Not easy to enforce once a snap coup has taken place.

Or in the interests of public safety the perpetrators of any upcoming coup give advance notice and a list of names?

But’ judicial coups’ like what is ending Pita’s publicly backed run are perfectly fine.

“…sole authority to immediately suspend

any army, navy or air force officers at any ranks

or in any positions from duty,

given suspicion that those military officers

might possibly be mapping out a coup

with use of force

to overthrow an elected government

and tear up the constitution…”

- - - - - - - - - - - -

‘sole authority… has suspicion… of possibility’;

Sounds like an elected, paranoid dictator….

"IN AN UNPRECEDENTED MOVE TO deter future coup attempts, legislation has been prepared to empower a Prime Minister to suspend any military commanders from duty if suspected of hatching one."

Sounds like there's been "rumblings"!

And an ideal opportunity for career minded individuals to step up a rung by "fingering" their superiors!

Whatever you do, do not curtail our power, we are used to having nearly unlimited power, access to ridiculous amounts of money in our budgets, and being told nothing by anybody.

Nobody should get in our business, we are above the law, we are the most important institution in the land, and we provide so much for the Thai people. Thailand could not exist without us, so do not meddle in our affairs. Or else.

Laughable and nonsensical. Suspend? In most countries it carries immediate imprisonment to death penalty. The idea of a coup is to overthrow the government. So if successful what good would that do?

Perhaps 'suspend' in this proposal means to hang by the neck.🙂

Like the RTP they are a law unto themselves.

As the RTM seems to have made itself into a political force (especially now through ISOC) since its 1932 overthrow of the absolute monarchy with allegiance to what seems to be its own sovereignty, it apparently fears abrogation to civilian sovereignty. Just what democracy deserves.

Everyone is starting to remember why Thaksin was ousted in the first place? The man is 100% self serving

I remember that he tried to nulify the power of the military and failed. I think what he tried to do by intervening in the military board which consist only of generals to promote and high level military reshuffle by adding civilians was good for the country. Now the process is again attempted and should be supported.

Speculations posted in this thread are meaningles since the regiments stationed in Bangkok are not under command of the army chief any more, but directly under Royal command.

I have an idea of a possible interpretation but I prefer not to express it.

As if Thaksin or PTP had any say on this matter....

Take Myanmar for example. Thailand doesn't need civil war, although coups never go that far in Thailand, but PMs get expelled

Just as Mao said: Political power grows out of the barrel of a gun.
