Careless driving and reluctance to render assistance after accidents, is not exclusively a Thai phenomenon. I've seen that in Asian, African, South American and in some Western countries too.

 

That Thais will 'not stop to render assistance' is simply not true. I find the Thais to be among the most caring and helpful people I've ever encountered.

 

That doesn't mean, though, that I don't see enormous room for improvement in the road culture here.

I remember years ago an accident in Phuket town where a minivan ran the red light and a friend of mine who drove like a lunatic slammed straight in to the side of the van, The van driver had no insurance just coming back from a visa run full of passengers, the police were trying to blame my friend.

Cars run red lights in every country.  What's newsworthy is the blatant negligence (corruption?) of the investigators.  Perhaps there will be enough pressure to open this up and have the driver charged.

The culture is different. Drivers often flee back to their own village, lie low for a couple of weeks, then turn themself in when the heat dies down.

 

It seems to be acceptable, and people who remain on the scene and do what we see as being the "right thing" are usually punished more severely. 

 

 We're not in Kansas, or England or Canada anymore. The rule book is different here.

How could the police test a hit and run driver for alcohol and/or drugs?

 

The refusal to look at nearby cctv footage is a strange one. It would be interesting to know the thinking of BIB on that one.

What’s required is some mobile phone footage filmed by a concerned citizen, followed by some moral outrage by outraged netizens. They police this country these days because without that the police don’t care.

I have referenced many times in this forum the red light jumping and specifically in Kamala. It is outrageous ... nobody respects the lights and absolutely nothing is ever done. Its not a daily event ... its every single light change. This is not an accident ... it was a deliberate run through a red light. Tragic. And it will happen again.

The same thing happened to my wife in Greece almost 13 years ago, just three months short of her 65th Birthday. Drunk driver with his foot in plaster. The difference then was that the driver owned up to been at fault. These types of incidents show that how easily life can be wiped out by carelessness and stupidity.

In my opinion, the governor of Phuket need to to sackall the commanding officers of that station and make sure personally that all cameras and other safety equipments are in working order and that someone will make sure that it will stay in working order...

Unfortunately, that would involve diverting money away from his personal ventures, and that would never do!

Reading the story it said the van she was driving was hit by a other vehicle 😳 

I take it she was. A pedestrian who was subject to a hit and run 

Incident 

The amount of  accidents and deaths involved here in  Thailand does not seen to be a priority to the police authorities 

More action is needed

Agree with you here on both counts.

 

I think the source of the story are local expats, and think there will soon be an update.

Tragic. Hope there are consequences for the driver.
But she is not entirely faultless. Having been here so long, she knows not to trust traffic lights, esp when there is little traffic (otherwise how could the van have been speeding?) and everyone knows that people drive like crazy.

Funny you should say that, as it is exactly 25 years since I first came to Thailand. Been living here the last 15.

 

Our experiences clearly differ then. Have never lived on Phuket, though. Visited it a couple of times, years ago. Didn't like it then, and from everything I've heard since, I don't think I would like it now either..

One could only hope, that this will hit international news just as hard, as when the swiss guy gently kicked the female doctor away from "his" stairs!

A country with such a negligent police force, deserves to be avoided by many tourists.
