An Expat Who Left Thailand

Another evacuee. Refreshing honesty. I like the discussion about taxes. You don't get a tax receipt with just savings money coming in, that's only for retirement pensions or social security. Thai revenue probably won't review actual Usa Irs tax returns so there's no way I know of to prove that money has already been taxed in another country.

Reasons he left

1. Can't speak Thai .............. can't say that bothers me, I don't want to talk with them.

2. Doesn't like the Thai drivers ......... all 3rd world countries are like this. 

3. It's too hot .......... not really a surprise, get used to it.

 

All I know, is I don't want that guy piloting any plane I'm riding in.

People with options, can make changes to their lives when they feel they had enough. Simple as that.

 

As far I know, you still live in Uk, How is that going to work when you have to pay tax to Thailand?

I just saw a little of the video where he prepares pallets full of things, I guess being sent to the USA.

 

I think one big problem seems to be that people say: Now I will live in Thailand for the rest of my life.

And then, soon or not so soon later they decide: Now I will leave Thailand and never come back.

 

When I moved to Thailand I also had the idea that I will stay in Thailand. But at the beginning I came with one suitcase and stored many things back home. I stayed here. But if I wanted to, I could have easily moved back. There was no need to transport pallets full of things. And obviously it's so much easier to move without all those pallets.

 

I think just tell yourself something like: I like Thailand, let me try and live there. If it works out, fine, and if not, then not. You don't have to promise yourself and the world around you that this will be a decision for life.

It'll never happen, next you'll be claiming the sea will rise, or you'll die if you don't have vaccinations ........ all just scare stories.

Guy in the video is a prize chump, buys a new expensive car  (sells it at 1/2 price a year later), rents a house for 3x the going rate (30kbht/month), can't travel without a container of baggage (now including a Thai gf).

Leaving after 20 months , he's never really tried to adapt to living here,

I arrived here 36 years ago with a spare pair trousers,couple shirts,socks,

underware, and shortwave radio *,I was not planning staying here ,I was

on my way to Costa Rica the long way around, 

 

Just fell in love with Chiang Mai , which was so different than it is today,,

Built a house ,started a family ,and would not change a thing ,very happy,

I even have a grave bought and paid for in the foreign cemetery ,so I will

never be leaving Thailand .        * and plenty money ...that's important .

Personally, I feel that Thailand still has too many positives compared with living nowadays in North America.

 

I'm on my third year, and loving every minute of it!

 

Regarding him leaving, not really surprising if he couldn't handle a couple weeks in a luxury hotel room during covid.

 

About driving, yes, one has to be a whole lot more aware of what's going on around your vehicle, and you can learn that pretty quick after a couple of close calls.

Shipping a pallet of stuff here and two pallets back makes for an expensive holiday. Kudos for accepting it wasn't for him though.

I've been there on my 1st trip to LOS...In 1991 if I recall near the river and a bridge nearby.A lot of history there. Some UK based teak vendors ....I read a book with some of the history of that cemetary.  There were some  prominent foreign teak merchants there. In the era of Rama V ...

Understandable with his body mass, Thailand is extremely hot.

Fair enough. He's lucky to have that option.

Time to dust off my old tale of leaving LOS. After living here 7 years, I had gotten fed up with all the bureaucratic nonsense, so I pulled up stakes and moved to Zihuatanejo, Mexico. It was NOTHING like in "The Shawshank Redemption." You think traffic is bad in Thailand? It was NOTHING compared to that sh!thole! Imagine having a tank with a 50 mm gun controlling traffic. Health care? The mayor's wife died cuz they couldn't get her to a hospital for over 8 hours when she got thrown off her horse. And the list goes on and on.

 

My only mistake was not getting a re-entry stamp. I was back in Thailand 6 weeks later with a renewed appreciation. Sure, I was reminded on day one why I left in the first place, but somehow it had just become much more tolerable.

6 digit signing bonus and work for 24-36 months before retiring 'again' would be very tempting.

 

He seems like a nice guy. He should drop a few pounds to be sure he can make it to a 2nd round of retirement.

Looks like the beach and water are pretty nice. Anything else besides hospitals and traffic put you off? Hard to see how it could be worse then Pattaya & the visa situation is much better with permanent residency fairly easily. Not to mention that spanish is much easier to learn. Much nicer weather ss well.

The alligators aren't swimming in those waters EVERY day. The rent is at least 4 times the current inflated Pattaya rates. The whole time I was there I only saw one attractive chica, virtually no night life - it's a retirement mecca for Canadian retirees. BORING!!!!!!!!!!

I find in interesting how other people live.

I sold pretty much everything I owned and came with a backpack and a day-pack.
If forced to leave, I'll probably sell everything I own and leave with a backpack and a day-pack. 

I find other people's attachment to "stuff" rather amusing myself.    It's just "stuff."

I hope he did a health check up before going back. Pilots have to be healthy for flying and they have mandatory health check ups. He looks like a prime candidate for high blood pressure, diabetes and other weight related problems. I wonder how he even fits into a seat in a modern Jet Cockpit.

He is not making it up, he is right and is brutally honest. I walked around today outside but it was so hot and sweaty I stayed in most of the day. I don't need a/c but after a half an hour I was done outside. Hardly any Thai people were walking around either. That's a wasted day for someone who wants to retire outdoors and not sit inside all day with a fan. There have been many days like that this year in Pattaya.
