I have been hanging out with dark skinned friends on Samui, and in Bangkok, and I could see they were getting treated quite differently than I was. There is a very deep seated prejudice against dark skinned people here.

When I was living on Samui many years ago I came up with a concept of opening a bar called the Chocolate Bar. I would only hire dark skinned women, dark skin beauties, and glorify their gorgeous dark skin instead of making them feel self-conscious about being dark. I'd offer gifts, prizes, and free trips, all kinds of incentives to get the girls to perform well and become top performers. When light skinned women would come in for an interview I would take glee in telling them that they were disqualified because their skin was too light, and they weren't hot enough.

The glorification of whiteness here is quite obnoxious, from my point of view.

For me there's just no question that the dark skinned women are the best of what Thailand has to offer. Some of them are absolutely exquisite, white skin and whiteness is so spectacularly overrated.

Always very amusing to read falang men (not refering to you) in Thailand making vile or racist comments against other male foreigners who have different looks...but and the end of the day it appears that those falang men only manage to afford a dark skinned Thai lady. Sometimes obvioulsly by attraction maybe...

The colour consciousness exists in many communities, right into deep Africa surprisingly... but mainly amongst the lower classes who cannot hit on others apart from  colour of their skin and some communatarist divisions...in educated upper class environments, no matter where, people rarely are so colour conscious...

I am from a very low class environment, and have absolutely no education. That is why I like dark skinned women, no doubt.

Is it me or does it seem like a disproportionate number of crimes that happen in Thailand, seem to happen in Pattaya? And the same seems to apply to crimes committed against tourists.

It's terrible to be subjected to something like this, but the crime rates against foreigners committed in Thailand are still very, very low. However each and every crime seems to attract a lot of attention

It's much higher then reported. There is a reluctance for media to report since it tarnishes tourism. You're only hearing the tip of the iceberg.

You are the first person I've seen to say that, both Thai or foreigner. The obvious question to be asked is, if such crime is not reported in the media, how do you know!!!

I can recall a long past media man here in Pattaya privately telling us he was instructed to play down the negative reports for presumably that very reason.

I'm sure that happens. But when the problem becomes large and real, word of it usually rises to the surface via several channels, both Thai and local farang, I've not heard or seen anything from either.

I believe that. The media here is timid, and censored. Are there any news websites that are accurate and defy the govt. censors here?

People should never go out in Pattaya after dark. Take a whistle with you while walking in the city so that when approached by a pair of transgenders, you can scare them off before they rob you.
