Early this morning, the Royal Thai Police in Chon Buri arrested 17 Laos women and two Thai business owners during a raid at karaoke bars and restaurants in Laem Chabang. It was a response to reports about undocumented migrant workers. Over 20 immigration officers targeted various entertainment locations in the Si Racha tourist district around 1 am.

A detailed check was conducted on the workers' passports, work permits, and other identification documents. Out of the 17 Laos workers, 14 did not possess work permits. Additionally, two had entered Thailand unlawfully and one didn't inform the police about her workplace and job description within the obligatory 15-day period.

The two Thai business owners were taken into custody and charged with employing illegal migrants and providing them shelter. All the arrested individuals were taken to the Laem Chabang Police Station. The migrant workers are expected to be deported back to Laos.

Commissioner Itthipol Itthisarnronnachai of the Immigration Bureau had issued instructions to all immigration units and checkpoints across the country, ordering them to raid suspected locations and detain those who entered the country illegally.

And did they interview the women to determine whether they were trafficking victims? Or offer protection? No, just arrest and jail - and that's one of the reasons that Thailand is still on Tier 2 for Trafficking in Persons.
