Popular Post webfact
The Election Commission (EC) was today urged to annul last month’s senatorial election due to alleged pre-planned electoral rigging, particularly centred in Buriram. Defeated candidate Patrapong Supaksa filed a formal complaint, requesting an immediate cancellation and subsequent new election. Patrapong claims that 14 elected senators from Buriram, aligned with the Bhumjaithai Party, under the leadership of Newin Chidchob, were embroiled in rigging plots. He argues that many falsely declared their professional backgrounds, essential for the diverse representation mandated by Thailand's 20-category profession system. According to Patrapong, several senators claimed affiliations with professions they do not truthfully practice, violating legal prerequisites for candidacy. This misrepresentation allegedly facilitated bloc-vote rigging. The EC has postponed the ratification of all 200 senators-designate and 100 reserves while investigating the claims. The crux of the allegations involves unnamed political operatives linked to Bhumjaithai, who orchestrated these riggings. It is alleged that certain candidates received clandestine voting instructions during prior hotel meetings before the final election stage on June 26. Despite these accusations, the EC might proceed with ratifying the senators soon. Those found to have breached election laws could face judicial suspension from their legislative duties. This unfolding situation casts a spotlight on Thailand's electoral integrity, particularly the role of political machinations in shaping legislative bodies. Should the claims hold, it could lead to significant reforms or rerun elections, aiming for true representation and restoring public confidence. Patrapong’s push for annulment underscores a broader call for transparency and fairness in Thailand's democracy. Observers will closely watch the EC's next moves, which could set crucial precedents for future elections. Popular Post dinsdale
Should never had happened in the 1st place. Only one way to elect the Senate and that's through a national election with no stupid stipulations about who can run. The Senate is for the people and should be voted for by the people. 6 1 1
ChrisY1
Nullify the results......Oooh....that'll be difficult..all the "fees" have been paid and accepted! Popular Post herfiehandbag
Gracious me - ballot rigging and electoral shenanigans in Buriram? Surely it can't be so! 1 2
Popular Post bamnutsak
As far as I can tell, the Senate "selection" process functioned as designed. Opaque, easily manipulated with the public not allowed any voice in candidate selection. Just another demonstration that the powers that be do not want the public involved in Thai-style democracy. BJT was much more "adept" than PTP. I'm sure we'll be hearing about the money that changed hands in return for a Senate seat, and the disputes over returning the cash. 1
retarius
Thailand can't even organise a decent election. Shame on you, some on the EC, shame on the CC, and shame on the senators for blatant rigging even if it is not specifically prohibited in the constitutional documents. Artisi
Anyone found to have rorted the system should be given a minimum of 5 years behind bars and banned for life, including any others linked or involved with it. But TIT, where everything is above board, sweet and kosher.

It wasn't an election it was a selection a selection that from the outset was obvious it was open to manipulation and corruption. This part they organised quite well as the selection process does indeed seem to have been manipulated by corruption.

What if the vote will be cancelled and done again? Will the people who received money have to give it back? Will a second vote be included in the amount paid the first time? Will they have to get more money for a new vote? And will there be a bidding going on to influence the vote in a new direction? The Senate's nullification of FFP's majority election victory is a glaring example. 2

Andycoops
The EC should be nullified along with the entire senate, set up by a bunch of army Muppets who usurped democracy and have no idea how a country should be governed.

Srikcir
6 hours ago, dinsdale said: they know Thailand isn't a democracy What Thais got for decades is a Kleptocracy, also referred to as thievocracy. It is a government whose corrupt leaders (kleptocrats) use political power to expropriate the wealth of the people and land they govern, typically by embezzling or misappropriating government funds at the expense of the wider population. Kleptocracies are generally associated with dictatorships, oligarchies, military juntas, or other forms of autocratic and nepotist governments in which external oversight is impossible or does not exist. Russian is a classic example. Definitely not a democracy. (from Wikipedia)
