I retired here at 42 ,I knew i would have to be canny with my money ,as I did not

what to return to work again ,I am now 78 and pleased to say everything worked

out great , never wanted for anything ,just was not stupid with the money, 

 

With the help of my wonderful wife, she's a goodin , we work well together , after

the crash of 97 we moved out of cash , the interest rates had been great but were

starting to fall , so moved from cash to property ,and there were plenty of bargains

to be found ,and renting them out was a lot easier then ,lots of expats about , now

not so easy .

 

I think many men come here and from the start get carried away  with drinking

excessfully ,with only pussy on their minds , that's OK if you just on holiday here , but

not if you want to make Thailand your future ,  with family , business ect, so get that

out your system quickly , and most important find a good honest wife/partener ,

they are out there .......good luck

I like to play with computers too , but not games , after 97 had to start working (sort of) again,

looking after tenants and properties ,plenty of hobbies too ,

This a constant debate. When someone says 25k is enough I just don't believe it, but I know some poorer Thais have that kind of income and survive.. with unsustainable debts for most of them..

 

But the answer is in lifestyle. Before retiring I was in a mid level position in a UN agency in Geneva with some extra income from Israel. Altogether THB 500k after tax. This gave me a reasonable lifestyle, good holidays, good restaurants and nice activities like Paragliding, Scuba diving, mountaineering, hiking, skiing.. Family of 4, and I managed to make some savings, fortunately.

 

Here, with a new family of for I try to have the same lifestyle, without the "nice activities" because of age and "TIT". I have been spending all my 300k monthly pensions and denting my savings for the past 9 years. Everything I like is just so expensive. And don't ask, I have no interest in cars, modest Hondas fulfil our needs, Kids don't go to an International School and medical bills are refunded by my health cover.

I agree with the policy.

 

When we spend less on garbage that we do not actually need, we enjoy life more.

 

If one refuses to enter Thai bars, then one is happier.  There is little doubt.

 

For one, I like to study.  So then, I just need a super-fast BUDGET computer, and three other older computers, all running OpenSUSE Linux.

If I can have this, plus great stable internet from 3BB, then I need little else, and I am content.

 

Also, near my house, I have a nice and quiet place to walk.

 

I have no need for a Rolex.

 

I once had a Cartier watch, a NICE one.

But I don't know where it is now.

 

If we focus on the things that make us happy, and do not become distracted by manufactured needs, then we have a better chance of living longer, and living longer in a happier way.

 

I guess that is the point, for many....

If you look closely....this girl is obviously Chinese.

She has had her legs lengthened, which is quite popular elective surgery in many cities of China.

 

Personally, I do not like the look.

It makes the legs disproportionately long for the rest of the body.

 

Maybe this problem can be rectified by lengthening the neck, and some people in Thailand do know how to do this....by lowering the shoulders.

These kind of threads always make me smile as people are very quick to jump on somebody when they spend (what in their eyes) is a lot of money, but often turn into a competition to see who spends the least.

 

 

I spend approx. 20% more than I originally budgeted for, but my available budget for the 4.5 years since moving here fulltime has been 2x what I'd planned it would be (I err on the side of caution & treat things like Rental & 1/2 my dividend Income as a "Bonus" not to be relied up in my planned budget) so I'm comfortable with this. 

   

Oh & the 15% increase in GBP:THB has really helped 🙂

Definitely spending more now than I did 10 years ago.  Pretty much everything has gone up in price.

 

Probably averaging around 100,000 - 120,000 a month.  But if I wanted to live frugal and not travel much I could live on a lot less.

Yes. Because I believe that waste does nothing good, and only leads to unnecessary debt for individuals and families, as well as contributing to Global Warming.
