Slow heartbeat

I decided the other day after reading on this forum about heart matters that I would go to my GP and ask for a heart test.

 

Apart from suffering with no symptoms of high blood pressure or as that Doctor wrote "hypertension ' the doctor said without any symptoms he would only do a EKG which was done in his nurses office by a nurse who said to me there was nothing wrong.

 

I noticed on the report paper of all the drawings graphs etc it said I I have a blood beat of 51 Bpm 

 

I immediately googled it and it said someone with such a slow heart beat needs a pace maker !!!!!

 

I immediately went back to my GP and demanded I get a appointment immediately!!!!

I don't care if there were four in front of me , she told me to take a seat directly outside his door 🚪 

 

Anyway to cut a long story short he said there is nothing wrong and it could mean I'm "very fit " 

I told him about Google and said slow heart beat means I need a pace maker 

 

I didn't gather at the time he was being sarcastic until I told a friend.

"Would you like to see Australia 's leading heart Specialist?

Yes definitely I replied immediately 

 

I managed to get a appointment for a Echocardiography 

Has anyone else had this 51 Beats per minute, I have no pain although I think I felt some pain this morning 

 

Anyone else with this 

I will go for a Echocardiography today at the reluctance of this GP who seems to be sarcastic and believes I'm "imagining " the pain 🥴

I'm surprised google didn't tell you that you have cancer of the big toe....    Google is a great source of info, but regarding medical info it [the googleverse] has a tendency to tell us that we are a breath away from tying if we fart more than 7 times per day.

 

My Wife's resting heart rate is about 55 bpm, mine is about 60 bpm - my father (who is in his 80's has had a resting heart rate between 48 and 55 over the last 20 years).

 

Ultra-athletes also have very low resting heart rates.

 

My point being - don't rely on google for information. Don't worry about it, a low heart rate is not abnormal.

But, yes, by all means get it checked out.

Lots of better info out there that suggests a 'reasonably' low resting heart rate is very good - the suggested range is 50-80 bpm for a fit and healthy person.

I wear a smart watch, often I check my bpm. 

 

It can be in the high 40's at times but mostly 50's and 60's resting. 

 

I'm very fit.

Thankyou Richard I managed to get in a urgent appointment for a Echocardiography or whatever it's called.

 

I could of waited until late NEXT WEEK for a free test at a Government hospital or pay $200 AUD to get it done TODAY at a private facility which I elected to do 

 

Who knows I could be dead waiting for a Government hospital to do it next week albeit free under Medicare but I would rather just pay the $200 to survive this

I'm not sure if this thread is supposed to be a joke or not but 51bpm is just fine. Mine is usually in the range 48-55bpm resting. My son and daughter about the same. If it goes up with a bit of activity then no problem.

I told the GP I have heart pain he asked where?

I pointed to the left side of my chest 

He said people with heart pain usually have it in the MIDDLE of the chest ?

He then went on about do I eat too fast and have any reflux ?

I will find another doctor, 4 different doctors I have gone thru this year

Last time i was getting my lab blood tests my heart rate was 52, about right for my fitness level. My waking up resting heart rate can be 45

I'm sceptical now about paying the $200 for a urgent test maybe I can wait until next Wednesday for the free test at the Government hospital?

At total rest mine is 54, and usually 60. Working out over 50 years, even without cardio, does this, along with a healthy diet. I had an ECG just last week when I was going for an endoscopy and colonoscopy. It said abnormal, which it's done in the past before a second test. They were worried about doing the procedures. I told him this is how it's been all my life as I work out. Google can  be off. The best source for accurate advice is WebMd.

Also consider a Treadmill Stress Test. Shows how your heart works under load. But as many have said 51bpm at rest is not abnormal for a fit person at rest. And you were of course laying down so very little load on your body.

 

Sometimes Google can make you almost <deleted> yourself …

If you get a pacemaker it would likely be set to keep your heart beating above 50 bpm. When I had mine put in my heart rate was 8 bpm(beats per minute)

I have experienced a really low heart beat - google or healthline or some online service recommended doing a self heart monitor while still in bed at morning.  I tried that - super low but as soon as I got out of bed and began moving around, it settled into a low-60's healthy heartbeat at rest.  But it sure seems better for a low heart rate than a high rate.  Wait to see what the specialist says.  Maybe you are just super fit...I notice my wife and daughter have low blood pressures and slower heartbeats too.  I am happy with my current BP and heart rate as it is very good for someone much younger than me.  Be happy and good luck.

When hart rate gets low, a long (>30s) ECG can reveal PVCs.

 

Last year I had Bigeminy, one PVC after every beat and my pulse showed 30. Which was alarming as I am not running 30k a day.

You need "urgent care" and yet here you are, venting to anonymous people and wasting bandwidth on the internet.

 

A friend of mine, outwardly healthy and in his late 50's was referred to a cardiologist after his annual medical exam indicated low heart beat, around 50 bpm. He now has a pacemaker (I think he's on his third battery by now).

 

More recently, another acquaintance was spooked after Googling a medical term related to cardiology that was used by his local doctor. He went to the government hospital, where after several hours waiting and flitting between departments, he saw a cardiologist who ran several tests/scan and said the word related to a non life-threatening condition, and he had nothing to worry about. For his troubles, he did subsequently get Covid.

 

Don't know what is more dangerous, Google or Government hospitals.

   For the last year my resting heart rate has been 49-53 beats per minute and I am very pleased with that. I run about 90 K a week and this is normal for me. During running my heart rate can go up to 160.

Most Doctors have a scheduled fee for appointments based on time, they charge extra for those who are time wasters, the patients that are hypochondriacs, the ones that sit in the chair and discuss their many ailments at length. 

 

Doctors/specialists love you guys, it's why they drive Ferraris and Lamborghini's 

 

I'm one of the lucky ones (great genes), I don't take any medication, only the occasional supplement (zinc, magnesium). 

I only see the doctor for my offshore survival documentation (OGUK), needed every 2 years.

Only Your Doc will tell you. There is more to look at as heartbeat only.

Heartbeat between 50 and 60 is widely considered as normal

Does anyone else wonder whether the source of much of Google's health mis-information could in fact be doctors who make such postings to keep the $$$$$ rolling in?
