NHRC calls for investigation into Thaksin's "VVIP" treatment

The National Human Rights Commission of Thailand (NHRC) has called on the National Anti-Corruption Commission (NACC) to investigate an alleged abuse of power by a state-run hospital and prison authority concerning former Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra.

 

The NHRC claims Thaksin received preferential treatment during his 181-day hospital stay, a privilege purportedly tied to his economic and social status.

 

According to NHRC Commissioner Wasan Paileeklee, Thaksin's transfer to the Police General Hospital from the Corrections Hospital on 22 August last year was deemed necessary due to his critical medical conditions, including a blood-oxygen level below 95 percent and high blood pressure.

 

This conclusion was reached after consulting explanations from both hospitals and medical experts.

 

However, questions arise regarding Thaksin's extended stay in a VIP room meant for less critical patients. Despite the Police General Hospital's justification that the VIP room was the only available space for closely monitoring Thaksin's condition, the NHRC argued the room usage was disproportionate.

 

The NHRC found discrepancies in the treatment of Thaksin compared to other convicts and noted that the Corrections Department failed to provide information about other prisoners receiving similar treatment, thus highlighting potential violations of ministerial rules on prisoner equality, reported Thai PBS.

 

Thaksin, who was released on parole on 18 February and has since shown no signs of the severe illnesses initially claimed, heightened suspicions about the legitimacy of his extended hospitalisation. Witnesses observed him frequenting various locations and working without apparent health issues.

 

The NHRC contends these actions exploited rule loopholes, compromising equality principles and basic human rights. Consequently, the NHRC has formally requested the NACC to launch an investigation and report their findings within 90 days, aiming to ensure accountability and transparency in the treatment of high-profile prisoners.

What a waste of time since the NACC will never do anything even when they find out he got preferential treatment. Looks like Thaksin will be needing to fill up some extra brown envelopes soon.

For proported chest pain, hypertension, and low blood oxygen.  Everyone knows that neck braces (and don't forget the arm cast) are what you use for that.

Low oxygen level and high blood pressure ...

Hardly life threatening conditions .

He did not want to go to prison , and he did not need to ...

He was allowed back into Thailand on the condition that he stayed out of politics and led a quiet life. He failed on both counts, and could be in real trouble come the review this month of the case against him. It appears that running away to Dubai, again, is no longer an option.

While I admire the optimism of Khun Wasan, I feel asking the NACC to investigate is akin to asking Pooh bear to mind the Honey Jar. Teflon Tony will have all the brown envelopes filled out already. We all know what NACC stands for.....Now Another Case closed.

Thaksin has taken advantage of the goodwill afforded to him since his  return.   Using silly medical props and petty ailments is  now being belatedly questioned. 

Hope he didn't sell his palatial pad in the desert.

There are very few Human Rights in Thailand.

Medical treatment is a fundamental Human Right. What business is it of the NHRC to decide how that treatment is given?

Remember - when he was first "sent to prison" he complained he was having problems sleeping - despite not even being there an HOUR.
He was then taken to the hospital because apparently thats what they do with all prisoners who have trouble taking a nap.

And THEN they came up with a host of "illnesses" to justify why he was being treated in a VVIP suite instead of where ALL the other prisoners get treated.

And NOW that someone has requested an investigation into his treatment, he suddenly has a number of NEW health issues and wanted to go back to his luxury dwellings in Dubai for medical consultations.

Which is a JOKE when you remember the "medical visa" scam Thailand started years ago which was specifically aimed at attracting wealthy Arabs to come to Thailand for medical treatment.

It sounds like a certain former PM may be worried his freedom could come to an abrupt end soon and is trying his old "just going to watch the opening cermonies of the Olympics and I'll be right back" scam he got away with last time.

Makes you wonder if they've cancelled ANY of his passports ? Or is he using one of those cheapy "third country" passports like those Chinese billboards were advertising ?

Of course these conditions CAN be life threatening - but we have not been given the figures..

Many people, myself included, can have a perfectly normal life with these conditions - no need for medivac and a 181 day VIP hospital stay.

I was held in ICU due to low blood oxygen level.

He so ill needs to remain in hospital for his entire sentence…. Thaksin paroled….. its a miracle and i don't need to remain in hospital for a minute longer

 

problem is the system has not been transparent quoting doctor patient confidentiality to avoid the truth coming out

Joking apart, it just shows what the Thai "elite" think of the mentality of the average Thai person, when they expect the "man in the street" to believe such bull****! 

 

Reminds me very much of "The Watchman's" (Prawit) pathetic excuses re his hoard of expensive watches - borrowed from a friend and he can't give them back because the friend is now dead"! Pfft! (We never did hear who the dead "friend" was, and I presume he still has his "collection"!)
