Dissolution of Move Forward disenfranchises 14 million Thais – US

The Constitutional Court’s decision yesterday to dissolve the opposition Move Forward party has disenfranchised the over 14 million Thais who voted for the party in the May general election last year and raises questions about their representation in Thailand’s electoral system, the US Department of State said in a statement yesterday.

It also said that the ruling jeopardises Thailand’s democratic progress and runs counter to the aspirations of the Thai people for a strong democratic future.

“The United States does not take a position in support of any political party, but, as a close ally and friend with deep and enduring ties, we urge Thailand to take action to ensure fully inclusive political participation and to protect democracy and the freedoms of association and expression,” according to the statement.

Meanwhile, Human Rights Watch (HRW) Asia Director Elaine Pearson said that the case against the Move Forward party, which was initiated by the Election Commission, was “a sham right from the start” and the Constitutional Court’s ruling is a severe blow to Thailand’s teetering efforts to restore democratic rule after years of military dictatorship.

Thailand has been a sham for decades. Anyone old enough will remember how they smiled to the rest of the world while collecting vast sums of money from the Americans so they could use the country as a military base for slaughtering innocents in North Vietnam. Or how Thailand propped up the Khmer Rouge, gave sanctuary to its leaders, and then pocketed tens of millions of dollars in foreign aid that was supposed to be going into rebuilding Cambodia when the regime fell. More recently, they have been financing the Junta in Burma.

Ordinary Thais = lovely, if somewhat simple, people.

The country's rulers = vermin.

I am confused by the average Thai mentality.

On the one hand, the slightest offence causes hoardes of people to be violent against the offender, 10 to 1, sometimes 20 to 1, etc.

On the other hand, their vote is blatantly stolen, their favourite party is disbanded and also barred from running the country, and....  nothing?

Wait for it.  I think people are waiting to see what happens to PTP next week.

Get ready for PM Prawit

the problem is that if they protest in the streets it is an excuse for the military to take over again.

The next election is coming sooner than theilitary wants.  All they need do is p!ss of PTP and it will be game over

It's a saying that people get what they deserve. Average thais are politically ignorance, they know nothing about democracy. How else can you explain that poor thais give their votes to the elite parties or the criminal Thaksin? 14 millions gave their vote to MFP, but it should be considerably more.

This is not because thais in general are stupid, but because the lack of education. The people are indoctrinated to beleive that without the king and military they are doomed. Typically, members of MFP are educated people with a higher political understanding than the average thai. Hope they are able to use the coming time to politically educate the people.

This has nothing to do with the PTP. It's the establishment elite, the military and he who cannot be talked about. Getting Thaksin back was a political move by the Junta and it's boss.

The only ones getting upset are the expats on this forum .

most Thai people don't seem that concerned at this time 🤔
