Nothing will be done as once it happens, Thais will cry and expect the Western world  to bail them out. A smart move that will make Thai currency stronger at arround 10 baht per UK pound and probably 5 baht per 1 Aussie dollar.

People who are very rich can afford to defend their properties with dykes and seawalls, the ordinary Joe can't. That point seems to be missed by posters talking about how the rich are buying waterfront property.

IIRC the Bangkok floods of 2011 put half the city under water. The only safe place to park was on the overpasses. That was storm Nock-Ten.

I was there in 2011. lived there for 20 years.

like clockwork, the same warning every year. If i recall correctly someone predicted just after i arrived that i would be underwater today

Don't you just love all the scaremongering "experts". Now we have an ecomist telling us of the disaster ahead. Who asked for his opinion?

Bangkok was built on a swamp and was called the "Venice of the East" for years because of its watery nature with many canals, streams and the majestic river Chao Phraya running through it. That is why the old Thai style houses have little on the ground floor and living and sleeping areas began 3m higher.

In general the floods subside almost as quickly as they arrive, however it is always important to properly maintain and upgrade water management schemes as and when it is possible.

I read yesterday in the Guardian about Antartica where and iceberg the size of Britain cleaved off and is melting. They said it would raise sea levels by 10 to 30 feet (which I don't believe)  but even a 5 feet rise would re-contour the coastlines of the earth.

So gingers crossed that a modest and slow rise in sea levels to wipe this vile and evil travesty of a city off the face of the earth, and a let's have mass exodus of people to the North and North East so that house prices go up. 

Here's a tip: never believe what you read in the socialist rag called The Guardian. It even prints a weekly column correcting all the mistakes it makes every week.

It already has, after the last big floods in Bangkok, people moved to Khow Yai and surrounding area.

It will not only be Bangkok that will kop it, but I am also in Lopburi province, 140 Km north of Bangkok, and we are only 56 foot above sea level, and they are places lower than this.

There's a map available on the internet that shows how variable sea level is over all of Bangkok.

Also, if you live by the coast but in an elevated place, say with a cliff between you and the sea, the rising sea level won't be so obvious.

If climate change does exist I put it squarely down to overpopulation. The world's population has quadrupled since 1900. Capitalism will always want more, but there's only so much greed the planet can take.
