In a remarkable event this morning, the Royal Thai Navy conducted the historic transfer of Coastal Patrol Ship T.99 through the streets of Chonburi. This rare spectacle, observed by many local residents, started from Juk Samet Pier and traversed over 10 kilometres to the Naval Fleet Command in Sattahip district.

T.99 holds a special place in Thailand’s naval history, embodying the vision of His Majesty King Rama IX The Great for the nation’s self-sufficiency in shipbuilding. Commissioned on January 9th, 1988, and retired on October 1st, 2022, this vessel served the Royal Thai Navy dutifully for over 34 years.

The transport highlighted a key chapter in the Royal Thai Navy’s history, with T.99 being one of nine vessels built from 1968 to 1987, aligning with King Rama IX’s Sufficiency Economy Philosophy. His inspiration stemmed from a visit to Germany in 1960, where he envisaged a self-reliant Thai naval force.

Today’s event was not only a nod to the past but also a means to honour the King’s foresight and contributions to Thailand’s maritime security and shipbuilding autonomy. The journey along Sukhumvit Road offered locals a rare glimpse into a significant part of their national heritage, reflecting the enduring legacy of King Rama IX’s vision for self-reliance, reported The Pattaya News.

So , build your own submarine then ...

instead of buying from China .

That would have been interesting to watch.  Too bad we hear about these things after they happen.  I can't help but think there's some way to find out about these things before it's too late to attend.  Maybe an interweb forum...

Next move....the aircraft carrier?

There's a ship for them in Chanthaburi I suspect the lcoals would willingly donate; about 15 years ago HTMS Phosamton was towed from its mooring on the Chao Praya to Samet Ngam about 3km up the Chanthaburi river, plan was for restoration and for it to be used as a memorial for education purposes.  Repairs, sandblasting and painting began but was abandoned due to, apparently, change of government and lack of funds.

Now 10+ years later it's well settled into the riverbed, water flows through rusted holes in the hull, too late to tow it offshore as an artificial reef, an eyesore that will last the nest generation or two.

History - the vessel was originally HMS Minstrel a WWII Algerine-class minesweeper in the British navy, sold to Thailand in 1947.

Two navy vessels were sunk as artificial reefs / diving attractions off Chonburi this week, T94 and T95.

They had a test run in a naval vessel just under 2 years ago.

Unfortunately, they can't drive anything that moves faster than a buffalo or an elephant.
