Lol! What I hear from other Thai drivers is that these EVs are NOT desirable at all. They just say it is a huge loss to buy one as no one want to buy it 2nd hand! They also sometimes catches fire. People have even died in them because the doors could not be opened after a crash and the people burned alive. In another incident, people had to break the glass to get people out as the doors also could not be opened! Forget the EVs until MAYBE on day they have better batteries and are safer!! At the moment I would not take one for free!!

Even though I own one of these models (Dolphin), I would hesitate to classify it as top range. Unless you are comparing it to more expensive Japanese made Toyotas and Hondas.

I see lots of EVs on the roads nowadays, lots of them bearing red number plates as well. I wonder what nationalities they could be as they’re not Thai, according to you.

Hmm. Is anyone else worried that all these new brands won't last in the real world for more than 5 years. Similar to computers, smart phones, smart TVs and other tech, these cars will become dated quickly as technology moves on.

 

Maybe we have entered the era of the 'disposable car' where you have to replace/update the key components every 3 - 5 years. Or maybe this won't be possible and you have to junk the old car (no one will buy second hand) and buy the latest tech vehicle.

 

It is hard to see all the electronics gadgets on these new brands still working properly after a few years. Replacement parts for old/disposable technology will be impossible to source.

Yes, there is a risk that some of these manufacturers might not be around in a few years. Chances however are that they would be bought up by bigger manufacturers. Chevrolet left Thailand a few years ago. I wonder how owners are managing parts and servicing. I would not be surprised to see Suzuki, Mitsubishi also leaving the Thai market in the next 5-10 years.

 

I don’t think I have any electronic gadgets in my car. There is an infotainment screen but if my iPas still works after 10 years in spite of all the updates and extra processing power needed to power the iOS, I don’t anticipate a problem with the current car software. After all, it’s not like the OS needs more and more processing power to run apps.

Does seem to be more than a few start ups, more so in CN, not exporting yet, as the market is there.

 

As always, choose wisely.   You got SAIC (MG) been around for awhile, Same as Geely/Zeekr.   BYD obviously.

 

NIO with niche market of swappable batteries, and hopefully will take off as well as their motorcycle line w/swappable batteries.

 

Others; GAC, Changan, GWM, Chery’s Arrizo / Tiggo, Li, have all been around for quite some time, a few whole or part state owned, or simply established a good market presence in a short time.

 

Others, waiting to make their mark.   Though can't really go wrong with the top 6 auto makers from China, have decades of experience, especially with more BEV experience over the non Chinese competition.

Top Chinese brands like BYD uses mostly LFP batteries which doesn’t contain any cobalt. Not sure though about the pathetic EVs built by companies like GM or your namesake.

Owners:

- Thais with good income

- Chinese expats (many engineers), 90+%, along with Chinese wife and kids, speak good English. Pleasant friendly polite professional people, often a couple of families at our village pool, very fussy about their kids being clean and tidy. 

- One farang with Thai wife, both have BYD cars. Farang very satisfied with their BYD purchases.

Petrol cars are literally 100 times more likely to go on fire than an EV. And lithium batteries don't explode. That's petrol tanks you're thinking of.

But lithium battery fires are really hard to put out once they start, so they make the news as people can arrive with their cameras 15 minutes later and they're still burning, where a petrol/diesel car fire will either have been put out, or all the fuel will have been burned up by the time the cameras arrive.

And for EVs, you have the choice of LFP which is a little bit larger for the amount of charge, but doesn't catch fire even as much as regular EVs. Let alone as much as petrol cars.

That’s misinformation, the battery packs are expected to outlast the car, 20+ years.

 

At least one manufacturer gives a lifetime warranty on the battery.

As others have mentioned, plenty of EVs use LFP batteries that don't contain cobalt. On the other hand, cobalt is used when refining crude oil, so everyone driving an ICE car are contributing to the problem of "child slaves mining cobalt in the Congo".

Cobalt in EVs ... is bad

Days past, as LFP is preferred now.

 

Cobalt in everything else ... is good.

While here in the UK EV take up is slow because costs to purchase or lease is high compared to average earnings, unless you buy a nearly new Astra or Mocha from Vauxhall.

The usual car industry suspects dominate the market, Tesla very popular only non EU brand to shake the market. MG, BYD minimal... No other Chinese presence.

Never heard or seen most of the EVs in this article and their pricings well, the EU manufacturers would be wiped out at such price points!
