Double Parking

Featured Replies

I am trying to find out if double parking is legal, or not, does anyone know what the law is.

Of course it's illegal, but with the lack of parking, it is what it is.   Just try to be as courteous as possible.   20+ yrs and I haven't been blocked in anywhere ... yet

It’s likely in the Thai Highway Code (yes it does exist) that you can’t, and there are many things that are illegal (such as overtaking on the left), but is typically ignored since everyone is at it. Avoid doing so near lines, crossings, traffic lights etc

The road traffic act B.E. 2522 states that drivers must park in designated parking spaces and ensure that their vehicles do not obstruct traffic or create unsafe conditions.

Double parking violates these rules, so it is illegal.

Ignorant at the same time

Yet it happens frequently.

The unwritten law is that they must leave the vehicle in neutral and handbrake off so that the double parked vehicle can be moved out of the way.

Sometimes is a pain in the arse having to move these vehicles but it works for them.  I don't double park... too much western brain washing?!!

road laws doesn't apply in private (most malls) carpark for example if you have a ding in a carpark, the police won't get involved

I used to drive imported ars that can't be left in neutral in 30+years I've never needed to double park, often you just move further away, up to inconvenient floors with no direct entrance and ther'll be plenty of spots

I’ve been blocked in twice in mall car parking, both times the cars were in clearly marked parking spots but had not either left in neutral or handbrake disengaged.

Car parking attendant got on his radio and a colleague appeared with a trolley jack ( on a small cart ) to remove the offending vehicle, didn’t appear they had announced the license plate in the mall or just couldn’t be bothered waiting.

I never park in these spots as from what i see nobody takes any care if they have to push another’s car out of the way and the parking attendants ain’t getting on their hands and knees to check correct location of the trolley jack !!
