Those numbers are terrible. Shameful. Chula and Mahidol have medical schools and can't even crack the top 400. Seems like both have fallen significantly since the last ranking.

To think I spent a lot of money on sending two kids from the family to university.

My good old friend (Thai Chinese) sent his both kids to MY. He insisted way better education and not that expensive. Also - few hours on the plane. Another - to TW. Another - CN.

Nobody even mention local universities and fancy-shmansy AU, NZ and TZ

600+? Those are not very impressive figures. There are some very capable people here (there is in every country) but many of these Thai unis are essentially businesses first.

Agreed - but they were educated abroad

On the other hand with all the Harvard scandals with alleged bribe money paid by rich and powerful to push in their dumb teens into the College, not sure the top so-called ivy leagues of America are any better.

True ... UC Berkeley is a good public school that always ranks up in the top 10 US Universites.

It's most likely that the reason for ranking so low is research. The medical schools probably generate their fair share of Q1 journal articles, but the other schools and departments do not. And the way many faculty members dodge publishing in quality English language journals (Q1 and Q2) is that several Thai universities run their own in-house journals. For the sake of individuals who need a publication in order to get an academic promotion, these journals are often enough. But if you really want to find out the standing of scholarship at Thai universities, find a list of faculty members on the university websites, go to Google Scholar, search for their names, and see what emerges in the list of publications. Then, go to https://www.scimagojr.com/ and you can see the rankings of the journals they publish in. Then, if you want go to Web of Science and look up the journal to see if it is included in their database.

Research used to be only as good as the Uni's Library.  Not sure these days with everything online ...

A schools library is what determined if a school was a College or University.

True. Libraries were/are an important factor in accreditation and the allowing of PhD programs. I don't know about today. But I'm sure that the Thai medical schools do have adequate libraries and funding for ongoing journals access. Not sure about all the others. I do know that Mahidol's MUIC is too cheap to get a subscription to JSTOR--or they were until a few years ago. I end up publishing two or three academic articles per year--not affiliated with MU or any other Thai university--and I can operate quite handily through the independent scholar access to JSTOR, finding other articles online in universities' online publication, through ordering books from outside Thailand, and, yes, using Zlibrary.

Looks like Bear Stearns stock before the collapse

The problem for Thai universities is that newer universities are continually joining in on the hunt for higher rankings. It's possible, and even likely, that Thai universities are improving their scores but still going down in the rankings, as others get even better and still others get listed for the first time.

Why are they so far down the rankings, is it the teaching or lack of research?

A variety of reasons.  As I know a bit about Hong Kong I did a few comparisons.

All but one HK Uni is in the top 100 in the world.  Research scores are all deep into the 90's (out of 100), Thai scores are between 17 (!!!!) and 50ish.  But is it isn't just this that is the difference.  The web site site is quite easy to navigate so you can maybe compare Thailand with wherever you are from.

Better comparison (for probably only me I hasten to add) was between HK & Singapore.  Both SG unis rank ahead of all HK unis, but not by much, mainly due to teaching quality and their research environments.  Time HK unis got some better teachers, or at least find out why the current ones scored so badly!!

I am NOT surprised by UWASH...!!!!!!

Most do not know the excellence of this school, however.....

I would never go there, if you paid me.

Makes me awfully proud that my two daughters had a dream to study hard, One graduated from UC Berkely, the other from UC Santa Barbara. Class of 2019. One now owns her own Media Consultancy firm, the other works for Space X.
