Very nice ceiling, by the way.

Also, it is KEY to be able to have CONTROL over the ever-present noise, and it is control that can make all the difference.

If we have a place in our houses where we can go to shut out all noise, then we become far less bothered by noise at all other times during the day.

This is just Psychology 101.

For example, just this morning I was sitting outside enjoying the cloudy day.

And then, all of a sudden, one of my neighbor's began using one of those tiny handheld vacuum cleaners that sounds like a Harrier Jet Engine.

What The F is he doing!!!!!!

So, immediately, I just escaped to my quiet room, and all became right with the world, once more.

Sure, in all other parts of the house I could hear him flying his Harrier.

But in my Quiet Room, there was zero noise...just the relaxing and comforting hum of my 2  XiaoMi Smart Purifier 4 Pro machines, and my super-quiet 24000 BTU Panasonic AC.

I could not live here anymore without a Quiet Room.

I do not care about the View from my Room, but a Quiet Room is as indispensable, as the noise is indefensible.

Now, in order to improve my Quiet Room, I need to find some HEAVY Drapes (as cheaply as possible, which means China I think), and then I can shut out the hot sun in the afternoons....and then......

And Only Then.....shall I have any chance of regaining my Sanity after living here (just this recent trip) for over a decade.

Wish I could find some fantastic Draperies for a Super Low price...somewhere in China.

I have Chinese friends that often travel back from China...and they could just carry them on the plane for me, on their return trip to this noisy land.

The infamous Room with a View. Looking out from Noel's Writing Room at Firefly across to The Blue Mountains, and the secret path (just to the left of shot) down to Ian's place at Goldeneye.

I choose both, quiet and view. I need both in my life. But quiet can be noisy if you count the jungle sounds and waves hitting the shoreline, or in Isaan, the frogs in the night after a rainfall is quite noisy, but Im not bothered of those kind of sounds. Their frequency is quite nice atcually. I also sleep good through storms and heavy rainfalls.

I hate noise from neighbours and traffic, cant cope with with those sounds. Especially in cheaper hotels in BKK, the noise from motorbikes speeding without sound muffler, is horrible.

As much as I enjoy a view I would have to pick quiet. Where I live every time there is a party of an ordination they start playing music full blast between 4:45 and  6:00am in the morning! I have sleep disturbances so the impact on my health must be significant. I will never understand why full blast music at 5:00am!!! As a result I will have to move to an area without 5 or 6am music!

Some would suggest you find the main fuse box for the area and pull out the fuse or turn the mains water tap off, but that would not be a nice thing to do of course.

You have to have a pretty low floor room to have any significant road noise.

I like a view and don't mind a bit of noise.

Traveled with a carnival and lived on a train back in the '70s and '80s, great views, fun noise.

Stayed at 15 floor at Amara in Silom last trip now, and even there you got this super hyped small bikes without sound muffler reaching us in the middle of the night. Annoying.

A quiet room no contest.

Amazing how many people select a room with a pool view only to find lt full of noisy Russian kids 24/7.

I agree .... prefer this much more.    If I wanted a room with four walls, quite, and no view I might as well stay at home ....

That's the reason we stay in a condo on the ocean.   I did that for 20yrs back home ....

Padded cell not working for you Gammy?

I would actually LOVE a padded cell.

But, aren't they expensive?

With a padded cell, I would be in a truly quiet environment for the first time since leaving the EastCoast of Taiwan, on the most eastern tip of the entire island of Formosa.

It would be great.

A view is a must, or I'd just live in my car, truck, or van, even a tent.   Why I was never a criminal (white collar) as couldn't do the time, not even in a fed prison.  OK, maybe a year or 2, depending on the pay off :cheesy:

I'd have to take up tennis thought :coffee1:

The view from the balcony of our house in Rayong. Personally, if I had to choose between a quiet room or a room with a view, I would take the room a view. Restful and calming even if there is noise outside.

Which are the prisons with the best tennis courts, the best views, AND having the most comfortable padded cells?

I know of a great prison on the Green Island just south of the main island of Formosa.

Years ago, the tiny island was quite unspoiled.

Plenty of fish due to the currents that pass by that geographical location.

Low population density, too.

But that was back in 1985.

These days, they have ferries running back and forth and the passengers these boats carry have trashed Green Island....for sure.....

You will never find a Quiet Room, ever, next to a basketball hoop.

I know this from vast experience.

Good point. The one in the pic is not used any more, since the kids grew up.

Why do you think that readers are interested in the make and power of your home appliances? Nothing else to fill your post with?

The fed prison in PA (Allenwood Low) didn't even have a cyclone fence around it.  It's pretty much a joke.   Although they did take the pool & courts out.  No longer allowed to play golf at the local course.

Club Feds just aren't what they use to be.  Make a man walk a straight line in life.

Other than the hoop, the scene is idyllic, and quiet, and with a view.

@steven100. I'm totally the same, 50 feet from my balcony ; if that, and my toes are in the Gulf of Thailand. Did the box rooms living in London for years. Need the Long View especially when watching the setting sun.

Visited Coward's place in 2001, and got to sit in his chair and stare out though that window. Absolutely magical. In fact the property use to be owned by Henry Morgan, the famous pirate back in the 1670's.

Room with a view--sea view preferred--would be my first choice.   Fortunately we were able to have both view and relative quiet a number of times.

High floors can have louder road noise than lower floors since, in many cases, there are no buildings to help block the noise.  I've been 30 stories or more up in Bangkok and still heard road noise from loud motorcycles, ambulances, and trucks.

One of the reasons this happens is that the noise from the street travels upwards, then hits the balcony ceilings, then becomes focused on the listener, sitting on his/her balcony, enjoying a cup of tea.

So, in essence, the ceilings and walls of the balcony are excellently designed to focus and concentrate and funnel the noise for BEST LISTENING by the balcony sitters, and this also helps to focus and concentrate the sound waves so that they can more easily penetrate into the room.

Not much to be done if you move into one of these Condo Noise Boxes.

How important would it be for you to have either a Quiet Room or a Room With a View, if you had to choose between having one or the other?

In my VIEW (get it?), I would always choose to have at LEAST one quiet room, always available, where I might escape anytime, and every time, a rooster began crowing, or someone began mowing.

Thailand is not only one of the noisiest of countries, but the type of noise one hears here is among the most annoying that I have ever experienced, in any country, except maybe.....(actually, there are no exceptions that I have found).

You name the noise, and Thailand has plenty of almost any type.

This is why having a Quiet room is so essential to one's piece of mind, not to mention one's utter sanity.

I would liken much of Thailand noise to listening to a two-year-old screaming infant, day after day, for intolerability.

Even doctors recommend new mothers to escape their screaming infants, once in a while, by escaping to the bathroom, turning on the shower, and plugging their ears....just to avoid going NUTZO.....and with good reason.

Similarly, this is why everyone living in Thailand should consider having one room in the house to escape to when the noise outside the house becomes utterly intolerable.

In most cases, it's possible to build one of these Quiet Rooms for not much investment.

In areas with severe noise, then one might need to dig a cellar, which could double as a wine cellar.

But, normally, there is no need to go to these lengths.

Are you one of these people who demand a Quiet Room, and prefer a Quiet Room...over a Room With a View?

Because, I certainly am this type of person.

I have often dreamed about having just one room in my house that is almost completely quiet, no matter what is going on outside.

And, fortunately, I now have one.

Or, I will have one, once I put up some heavier drapes.

Fortunately, the room, as it is, is already quite quiet, and I hear almost no noise from outside after about 8:00PM.

Once I add heavy drapes, then all will be quiet as a mouse....or hopefully quieter....Some rats are rather noisy, as you know.

So here is an example of both a Quiet Room and also a Room With a View....

Which is best for you?

Listen, Guys...Please Listen!

Protect your Sanity!

Prioritize a Quiet Room, please.

How much is Sanity really worth to you, anyway???

Best regards,

Gamma

How about having both at the same time.   The condo my wife and I have has both.
