Due to technical problems at SAS I once had a flight departing Kopenhagen about 11 AM. Landed about 3 AM at an empty Suvarnabhumi.

Opposite direction day time flights are possible like Finnair.

I always use EVA from Heathrow myself. Flew from London last Friday night and actually got a free upgrade at the boarding gate as the flight was full. That hasn't happened for a long time. Have EVA gold card though and travelling alone so that was probably why. Was a pleasant surprise.

I know we're not allowed to criticise these articles and I'll probably get told off, but seriously can a human not just read these first and go "ooh, AI has gone a bit over the top with dreadful cliches and nonsensical phrases on this one (I mean "the flight frenzy took off" doesn't even make sense!), let me just tone it down a bit".

I just can't read their articles any more - surely they lose readers because of it.

BA does not do BKK-LHR direct, only LGW.

 

You are probably picking a return date where they either don't fly BKK-LGW or it's sold out.

When I checked out availability on this route about three months ago when the route/dates were first announced, it was under£800 r/t.

 

If you are looking at dates for next month and high season, pretty much all carriers will be more expensive, especially the non-stoppers.

I suppose you would just have said "it doesn't matter that I have paid for the seat, I can just take another one".

It's in the small print of AF-KLM's (and many other airline's) conditions of carriage that regardless of flight class, pre-selected or check-in seat assignment, they can and will ask you to change seats.

I see no point in flying with an airline that uses old and knackered seats and cannot offer adequate customer service. Simply upgrading my return flight from London would have cost nothing and solved the issue.

To quote them from their very first response to me, 'we realize the seat is a very important part of our service.'

 

British Airways has a lot of older planes (especially at Gatwick). The B777-200 (G-YMMA) they used on this flight - BA2231 LGW-BKK on 28th Oct - is 25 years old. I really hope the cabin is in better condition than you experienced.

 

I prefer Thai's B777-300ERs (HS-TTA, HS-TTB & HS-TTC) to/from LHR that were delivered new just 2-3 years ago.

That's fair enough if there is good reason for it, but try going into a shop and buy something then the shopkeeper asks for the item back and will not refund your money. Same thing.

Not the same thing at all. If you had been denied boarding or otherwise kicked off the flight with no alternative booking or a refund, then that's analogous to your shopkeeper scenario. The airline got to your destination, albeit in a different seat.

KLM changed the seat I had selected at online check-in the previous evening. They did it when they scanned the boarding pass for boarding at AMS, loud beep from the scanner, tore up the one I had and gave me a new seat, about six rows further forward. When I asked, I was told it was so they could seat a family. I had a look back there once the plane was full and doors closed ready for pushback and there was no family group there and the aisle seat was empty.

 

The reason I asked for that particular window seat as that 777-200ER seat configuration angled slightly as the cabin tapered towards the rear so you got an extra couple of inches of legroom for free. Being 6'4", and KLM being my then preferred carrier, the A or K seats on this row were my automatic choices. I gurned at the Chief Purser about the relocation, but she told me I was wrong and, apart from exit rows, the seat pitch was the same from front to rear of coach. I asked her to go check, but she gave me the "I've flown hundreds of thousands of miles on a 777" argument, so I left her to her delusion. A few hours later, she came up to me and apologized as there was a seat-pitch change on that row on 777-200ER but not on the regular 777-200's, and she was unaware of it. So for compo, I got a couple of glasses of port from the Biz class section after dinner. On deplaning, she handed my a wallet with some discount vouchers that could be used for lounge access, duty-free purchases and discounts on tickets.

 

KLM got worse after that.

BA could introduce a free of charge "repatriation of remains" service.  That I would sign up for.  Otherwise I'll pass on them, never again (alive).

Gatwick and BA are a perfect match ...... Gatwick is a dump , BA are a disgrace who in my mind should be forced to change its name ..... Owned by a Spanish company , it is far from British . They have been woefully slow to reengage  with the East after Covid and in my mind are best avoided

I'm not so sure, both Qatar and Emirates appear to have re-routed a lot of their flights out of Gatwick so not sure if anything going on with Heathrow?  BA are a pile of crap though!
