An Indian tourist, 29 year old Mr. Sreemany Debjit, has gone missing after slipping and falling while taking photos at a popular waterfall in Koh Samui. The incident occurred amidst heavy rain and strong water currents, which ultimately forced search and rescue teams to suspend operations in the evening due to safety concerns.

On November 9, Jirapat Chuchan, Deputy Chief of Koh Samui District, received a report that Mr. Debjit, an Indian national, disappeared after slipping at Na Muang Waterfall 2 in Na Muang, Koh Samui. He was reportedly walking up to the top of the waterfall to capture photos when the accident occurred.

Authorities from Koh Samui Tourist Police, the Provincial Disaster Prevention and Mitigation Office in Surat Thani, and local rescue teams quickly mobilised. However, persistent rain and strong currents posed significant challenges for the search efforts.

According to Mr. Debjit’s friend, they had visited the waterfall despite the continuous rain. As they climbed to the top, locals warned them about the dangers, advising against proceeding. Nevertheless, they continued. At the top, Mr. Debjit was taking photos near the edge when he slipped and disappeared into the powerful current before his friend’s eyes, who quickly sought help.

At 18:30 rescue operations were halted due to darkness, worsening weather, and strong currents, which created a high risk for responders.

Authorities plan to resume their search on November 10 at 08:00.

Meanwhile, Police Lieutenant Thitima Srilamoom, an investigator with the Koh Samui Police, has taken Mr. Debjit’s friend to the station for further questioning.

Both Na Muang Waterfall 1 and Na Muang Waterfall 2 are dangerous to climb in rainy season – warnings are serious – it has happened before that foreigners climbing the waterfall in the wrong season falls fatally...😢

Went up there early October it was still pretty dry, but we didn’t go all the way up. Not for the old for sure.

But last few weeks have had big rains and last few days even worse rains. He was yet another poor soul who thought he knew more than the locals.

This waterfall has water-fed algae growths, that are not obvious to the eye, but make banana peels seem stable footing like mountaineers boots.

Every year or so this sad story is repeated.

oh dear Georgealbert,     goodness gracious me '  ....  the warnings were given but they knew better.  His body will turn up down stream somewhere in a couple of days.

There won't be any chicken masala served tonight at Abdul's kitchen restaurant that's for sure.

very sad indeed...

I hope he learnt from his mistake.

The operation involved coordinated efforts from several agencies, including Koh Samui District officials, the Koh Samui Municipality, the Koh Samui branch of the Disaster Prevention and Mitigation Office, the Koh Samui Police Station, the local forestry department, the Koh Samui Tourist Police, a military task force from the Region 4 Internal Security Operations Command, and the Samui Rescue Center.

Not the best time for a photo-shoot at a waterfall.

How can he slip?

well,   if your stand on a slippery sloped rock and lose your balance because of failed grip then that's usually a slip.

exactly Trav,  but they didn't listen.

sad. but avoidable.

Why do people always go up there when it's pouring with rain and always someone dies despite warnings.
