You will generally not get that kind of meal -- WITH wine, extras and decent condiments -- at a comparable beach restaurant in a comparable part (or anywhere) of Thailand, and I live in a non-touristy area. 200 baht? 🤣 I love Thailand and will probably die here, but some of you guys are living in cloud cuckoo-land with your blind defence of the place. It was cheap once upon a time, but many things are now more expensive than in European countries, esp Spain. Even groceries in the UK are way cheaper... your boxes ion packet noodles aside.

Perhaps someone will find something comparable lol in some dingy restaurant in that world class family resort called Pattaya, but what the op is showing here is the norm. Other areas of Spain are cheaper than Torrevieja, then get across to Portugal and it goes down again. Then you have your healthcare and easy visas.

Without the wine, yes you can, and very easy, as we do quite often.  Wife and myself eat good at ฿350 at surfside restaurants.

I can't remember the last time I spent ฿350 for a meal, for just myself.  Or ฿700 for the both of us.   That's a major pig out.

I don't think any woman would be with me if I didn't pay them.

The difference between UK and TH, I couldn't afford a small one in the UK, only cows.

I thought they didn't have small ones any more in the UK. Like north America, they're basically all cows now, especially the older ones. And as an old fart, I don't have enough money to acquire the younger ones over there.

40-60 baht !!!???

Please tell me where I can get a meal like the one in  the pics for that ?

The Thai equivalent is very common.  Most outdoor restaurants will sell the Thai equivalent dish of fried rice with meat for 40-60 Baht.  You must have seen this.

For sure. Me too. But the wine is a big deal (at least 150 a glass of cheap plonk) as is location. Ralf keeps harping on about Nongnowhere… people are misreading the op. Beachside restaurant in first world country (at least I think Spain is), meal with wine and extras thrown in. I bet it was a good meal in a well kitted out restaurant, clean and served promptly. I think the point being, Thailand is not cheap; at least nowhere near what it was — Vietnam and Cambodia are cheap. Start getting into nicer restaurants in Bangkok or Phuket and you will pay handsomely… waaay more than you would in Spain.

If you need wine with ever meal, then don't come to TH.  But food is cheaper here / TH, usually.  OP certainly wasn't fine dining, considering the table cloth and chair in photo.  Though some better seating available.

Nice side of fries & salad, but the chicken was looking a little weak, though could be optical illusion, considering the sides.   But chicken is about the cheapest thing one can order.

Photo I posted earlier at link, was beef & 2 seafood dishes, all of ฿160 / €4.45

You're already paying double for a beach condo, double for water, and double for phone/internet.  I assume the previous tenant couldn't afford to run the AC.

please show me where in Thailand u can get a 2 bedroom beach condo for under 8,000 baht???

and to the person that gets 10 meals for 407 baht>>>>  5555
fried rice gets quite boring and it nowhere as filling as the op's meal

As said before, I moved back to Spain (Europe) a few weeks ago.

Yesterday, my Birthday, I went to eat lunch at a beach restaurant in Torrevieja.
After I placed my order, a snack was put on the table.
The snack, consisting of a portion (Tapa) of Paella and bread was free.
On the table was a basket with Olive oil; Olive vinegar; Salt; Pepper; Mayonaise and Ketchup.

This was also free.

The main dish, 1/2 Chicken (4 steaks); Fried egg; French Fries and Salad was served 10 minutes later.
The portions was really big compared to Thailand.

I had also a glass of wine.

Total: 11.3 Eur (407 Thai Baht).

About the same price I would have paid in Korat at a restaurant (without the snacks).

Except that this was a beach restaurant.

True, you can eat at a road side food stall or at a food court very cheap in Thailand.
But exactly the same can be said if you go to eat at a trucker restaurant in Spain.

I don't eat much western food. Next to none outside of home. That meal would cost you about 250-300b in touristy Bangkok.

All foreign style food in Thailand expect to pay 100% mark-up above if same ingredients were made thai style despite being more work and ingredients.

Pro tip: Reduce your carbs ffs

You call it spoiling her. Everyone else calls it paying her. If you didn't spoil her, would she still be there?

You should keep your delusions to yourself. They make you out to be a fool.

If you have the money, and don't spoil your partner, will she still be around?

... I think not.   What world do you live in ?  What are you saving the money for ?  Spend it & live a life.

Or live in a box, eat and drink at 7-11, and get a P4P once a week or month with those savings :cheesy:

I dont give her any money, pay her money etc.

Beautiful woman deserve to be spoilt by their man.

I've always spoilt the woman I've been with, maybe I'm too nice but I work hard for my money and this is how I like to spend my money.

I reckon you are the delusional one.

Well, what do you expect from a "beach" BAR RESTAURANT PIZZERIA KEBAB? (as printed on bill). I'd normally stay clear of those kinds of "multi-ethic" eateries, beach side or otherwise, their kitchen consisting mostly of a couple of microwaves, with pre-mixed salad coming fresh from refrigerated bags.

Beach Bar is a stretch :coffee1:

Maybe rest/bar in a beach town, as a 4 lane divided road out the front door of the place.

Food looks decent, although all the options on the menu, I don't think I'd be ordering chicken, unless really jones for it.

You obviously never have been in Spain. When you gonna give Canada another try, because there also everything was better than Thailand, until it wasn't and you had to return with your tail between your legs

Been to Spain 3 times.

I will be leaving for Canada soon now that Trump won.

Then you should know, very few speak English, and are too arrogant to even try to understand you when you address them in English. Second language in Spain is French.

And return 3 weeks later like previously. Your return was based on the facts that you couldn't afford to live there., because everything too expensive for the little funds you own. So what has changed?

Without fail it is the people who cannot eat anything other that western food who complain about prices in Thailand.

Merry Christmas

It's not expensive for me, maybe for you. I didn't sell my property to build a house for a bargirl. I kept my property in Toronto, so the cost of living will be low for me. And of course, my super duper wifey has her own savings.

I'm going take what OP stated with a large grain of salt.  He did state ...

... "I went to eat lunch at a beach restaurant" ...

image.png.79db489dc12a270470c66ea0b44d7aab.png

Are y'all reading the same thread I am ? :coffee1:

And 450 is ฿16+k not ฿8k

... "Rent is 450 EUR for an apartment" ...

image.png.5110f7a9b4b28ec474cd394e4bd9fa4c.png

Locally, there was a 3 bdrm townhouse, only ฿15k, but didn't take dogs, so we passed on it.

image.png.bd161b8027a79267def0b636b59071a5.png

With unobstructed killer view ...

You mean the OP just twisted the facts to make himself feel good about the wrong choices he made?

Keep my house empty in the US, have no plans to sell though I may rent it out. Have no assumptions about the future, anything at any moment can happen that changes the trajectory of my future.

Who Are you, another grumpy old guy?

You one of the guys who likes those 'gold digger videos', you're the average Joe who can't pull the good looking chicks because you don't have the funds to spoil her.

I do spoil my gf to death, she is a beautiful young woman, all beautiful women need to be spoilt.

It's best for you to keep quiet now, you are not making any sense.

Seems yours is different - she doesn't want money, just lots of money spent on her. Beware the Thai yield curve* also.

*foregoing money now for a big payoff later. "Pays for everything, never asks me for money", but you bought her a condo/built a house.

OP:

Do you live in Alicante? Town looks very livable, great pedestrian and cycle infrastructure, and very clean. Downtown looks very walkable/livable. I imagine air quality must be quite good being on the coast. Is it easy to get around on public transportation? What do people say about potential for the type of catastrophic flooding experienced in Valencia? Might just have to check it out. Thanks for sharing.

You guys are delusional. You are so busy licking Thai boots that you have completely lost the plot.

Lost what plot?

OP starts a thread implying Thailand is too damn expensive because he found a meh meal for not to many pesos.

My comment was that it's not just a single anecdote that makes the claim valid, must consider all expenses.

The claim may be true for OP due to excessive medical expenses, which would be valid if he caught food poisoning from the meal in question.
