ALL consulates in S/E Asia switch to online eVisa system effective Jan 1st 2025
Even if the "payment in person" had an alternative the processing time for the eVisa would make it impractical if the application had to be made while in eg Laos. I can recall obtaining my first Non O retirement at Vientiane It was an overnight gig. Now it's an appointment and process time of what 3 days? What will it be when eVisa starts 2025 The folk requiring a Non O will simply obtain the visa from the local immigration office from visa exempt entry. There is no one requiring a tourist visa since exempt went to 60 days. -

However, a proposed VAT increase from 7% to as high as 15% has sparked significant public concern. Critics, including economist Athiphat Muthitacharoen, argue this would disproportionately affect low-income families by elevating living costs. Recognising the backlash, Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra has distanced the government from the controversial VAT hike, signalling it may not proceed. With fiscal pressures mounting—interest on government debt could exceed 14% of revenue due to borrowing—Athiphat calls for a fair, holistic tax reform. He points out that salaried workers bear most of the tax burden, despite a small portion of the population contributing. Support for the corporate tax cut is strong among business leaders like Sanan Angubolkul, who see it as a way to revive employment and reduce costs. Nonetheless, doubts remain about its necessity given existing BoI incentives, with industry voices cautioning against rising production costs sparked by VAT changes. Automatic Transfer Switch - reasonable cost alternative for faster switching?
We actually moved away from a contactor-based ATS. The issue is that if the control gear fails ALL the contactors open (fail safe) leaving you with no power from any source. This is not good if I'm in Cairo at the time. We moved to a "slow" motor-drive transfer switch which with no drive power just stays wherever it was beforehand. It also has an isolation key switch and a handle to manually select the source. Madam can handle this (with instruction) in the event of a total power failure. We just rely on simple UPSs to keep the technology on should the beast actually have to switch over. -
