What's a typical Swiss name?

And what does it matter?

Peter Huber, Werner Abegglen, Walter Meier. Leander Zurbriggen. That would be typical swiss name.

I did google the name, as I never heard somebody called like that in Switzerland. I found somebody (maybe even him) living in Switzerland. But the name is persian. One of the many refugees that got a Swiss Passport after some years.

It's not common for this immigrants to act like original Swiss people. Because of the mass of immigrants in Switzerland its more the other way around. We, as a nation, start to act like our immigrants. And that does not better our behaviour unfortunately.

Of course he did.

I have worked in Thailand for many years and lived here for over 20 years.

Youths just don't do those things without being provoked, yes in other countries not Thailand.

The culture is very different from that of the west, an aggressive blast of a car horn, the middle finger, yelling out like a lunatic is considered provocation, I see this behaviour everyday from foreigners on Soi Buakhou. He's upset them some how.

He went to a restaurant and when he came out they were surrounding his car.

How do you reckon a 66 year old man provokes between 4-6 guys to the point they beat him up and smash their car ?

- Either they were upset because he parked in a spot they felt they had a claim over (parked in front of someone else is restaurant etc) and they wanted to teach him a lesson.

- They demanded parking money from him (this has happened in Bangkok to a friend parking on the roadside, the friend refused to pay and returned to a car with flat tyres) - he refused to pay and the beat him ?

- They were breaking in to his car and he caught them, they reacted ?

- They were sat on his car and he wasn't happy about that, he reacted, they reacted worse ?

--------

Whatever happend - they were looking for trouble.....   it seems the guy was naive enough not to avoid giving any possible trigger to a group of thugs.

You only mention 'German' sounding Swiss names. As far as I know Switzerland has four different language regions, so probably four different 'typical' Swiss names.

I'm from the Netherlands, and I have a name that looks like it's from Spain or Portugal. And my family tree goes back at least 250 years in the Netherlands. Imagine how the reactions would be from the usual xenophobes on this forum if I ever appeared in Thai news.

So someone's name is basically totally irrelevant, that's my point.

Ah yes.

Were they supposed to challenge him one on one to a fight and hand him a pair of boxing gloves ? What world do you ppl live in ?

The Swiss guy probably insulted them and showed them zero respect. The concept on honour really seems lost on westerners. Big talk, no substance. Well some people aren't just talk.

hmmm.. the invocation of "honour"... what an misplaced concept.

Is there anything honourable about a pack of 4-6 thugs descending on a 66-year-old man like vultures? the notion of honour is ridiculous.

It’s almost comical, the mental gymnastics some engage in to absolve these brutes of blame. As if their excessive, violent frenzy could somehow be justified by a perceived slight or an unkind word.

Honour? Let’s call these guys what they are: thugs. Not misunderstood, not provoked, not righteous. just a mob of reckless degenerates who saw an opportunity to wreak beat an old man.

Had they had any decency they would not have smashed a car and beaten an elderly man.

Decency, honour - no... not at all - just thugs.

Absolutely not... I'd go as far as to make the assumption that he may have even swore at them and told them to 'get the f... of his car' (IF thats what happened - again just speculation of course) - that still does not warrant a 4-6 on 1 beating and smashing up the car.

For this reaction to take place, these were the 'types' of thugs to be looking for an issue rather than simply react out of necessity.

These Swiss men are famous for the quick tempers in Thailand, kicking doctors, bashing elderly women in supermarkets etc
Swissy was given an attitude adjustment lesson in manners. Thai kids just go around bashing tourists for no reason.

Tourism has recovered since Covid, the easy visa policy has had its desired outcome.

Time to crackdown now and make it harder for these undesirables with no manners.

They make it harder on all us nice people here.

you don't sound very 'nice' to me,  Mal B.

I'm agreeing with you....    reading back I've worded my reply very poorly.

Quote: [I’m not saying the beating was justified.  Just avoidable.]

Absolutely not *justified*...    [just avoidable] - agreed, I'd go as far and assume he swore at them... (yes, perhaps very avoidable.

Re-write:

I agree with you, this was absolutely not Justified...  I agree that there is a likelihood that this was perfectly avoidable by keeping quiet... Its even possible the Swiss guy swore which triggered the thugs...  (conjecture of course).

Nope - but I know others who have...   in both Thailand and elsewhere.

The common denominators in all situations is pure thuggery and weak law enforcement.

This was a group attack on one 66 year old man - in what world could this possibly be justified ?

I’m not saying the beating was justified.  Just avoidable.

Can you confirm the Swiss man didn’t bring it on by running his mouth?

I have witnessed that plenty of times by farangs in Thailand in various situations.

A completely unprovoked attack.  Never witnessed by me

These punks doesn't need any provocation.

Exactly, they are more than willing to do the provoking themselves.

The very existence and presence of a "farang" can be enough "provocation".

I never go outside my walled compound.

Perhaps he looked at the boys in the wrong way.

Is there any camera evidence?

Does this guy have a history of provoking people?

So much to wonder about.

Since I rarely go out, and almost never go out after sundown, I feel very safe here where I am.

I like the peace of mind which I very much enjoy.

The only experience I have with seeing Farang picked on is when I read it in the news.

Also, statistically speaking, bad things will happen.
