Thai Police Officer Suspended for Firing Gun Outside Thonglor Pub

A Thai police officer has been temporarily suspended after allegedly firing a gun into the air while intoxicated outside a well-known pub in Bangkok's Thonglor district.

 

On 16th December, Police Major General Witthawat Chinkan, Commander of Metropolitan Police Division 5, issued an order for Sergeant Major Montree Meedet's suspension. The sergeant is accused of gross misconduct and now faces an internal investigation.

 

Montree, an officer responsible for crime prevention in Thonglor, reportedly shot his firearm while drunk. Initial charges against him include possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition, carrying a weapon in a public area without permission, and discharging a firearm in a town or community without just cause.

The decision to suspend him was made to prevent harm to the police force's reputation and public safety. The suspension is in accordance with police regulations and he remains suspended pending the outcome of the investigation. Sergeant Major Montree retains the right to appeal the decision within 30 days.

 

The incident has raised concerns over police conduct and public confidence in law enforcement in Thailand. Authorities are under pressure to resolve the matter swiftly and impartially, reported Workpoint News.

All 140 officers at Thong Lo Police Station performed 10 sit-ups today, December 17, as an apology after an officer fired a gun into the sky outside a nightclub on Soi Thong Lo 10 in Bangkok on Saturday, December 14.

 

Police Sergeant Major Montri Meedate brought embarrassment and disgrace to Thong Lo Police Station last Saturday night. He was caught in a viral video engaging in a heated argument with a nightclub security guard, threatening him with a gun, and subsequently firing a shot into the sky outside the venue.

 

Montri’s actions stemmed from anger after being denied entry to the nightclub because he caused a disturbance and displayed unruly behaviour while intoxicated.

 

Montri’s superior, Thong Lo Police Station Superintendent Phansa Amaraphithak came forward to accept responsibility for his subordinate’s misconduct. He reported that Montri is temporarily suspended from government service pending an investigation into his actions.

 

Phansa held an outdoor meeting with the station’s 140 police officers today. He stressed the importance of the proper use of firearms and the responsible consumption of alcohol. Twelve rules regarding firearm usage were printed and distributed to each officer, along with the disadvantages of alcohol consumption.

 

 

As a gesture of apology, Phansa ordered all officers, including himself, to perform 10 sit-ups. Following the exercise, the officers shared a meal to demonstrate their unity and camaraderie.

 

According to a report by DailyNews, Montri was released on bail on the evening of December 16, with bail set at 150,000 baht.

 

Montri is now facing four charges including:

 

• Section 7 of the Act on Firearms, Ammunition, Explosive, Fireworks, and Imitation Firearm: possessing a gun without permission. The punishment will be imprisonment for up to 10 years, a fine of up to 20,000 baht, or both.
• Section 8 of the Act on Firearms, Ammunition, Explosive, Fireworks, and Imitation Firearm: carrying a gun in a public place without permission and necessary. The punishment will be imprisonment for up to five years, a fine of up to 10,000 baht, or both.
• Section 376 of the Criminal Law: firing a gun without a reason in a public place. The penalty is imprisonment of up to 10 days, a fine of up to 5,000 baht, or both.
• Section 392 of the Criminal Law: causing another person to feel fear or shock by threatening. The penalty is imprisonment of up to one month, a fine of up to 10,000 baht, or both.

Firstly they are doing "squats" not sit-ups

Secondly and more importantly, why are off duty officers carrying weapons?

Thirdly, when was his last performance review and when his drug and alcohol intake monitored, how many others has he intimidated over the period of his "service" with the RTP??

That is why the RTP is a laughingstock among all decent police forces throughout the world.

 

I am sure 10 sit-ups is going to correct the misdeeds of a wayward cop and lead his workmates to hesitate before threatening to blow somebody away, whilst pissed and carrying a gun in public.

 

Police officers who are off duty should not be carrying firearms.

 

On this occasion nobody was killed or maimed, it could easily have gone the other way.

I am surprised, because officers working out of the Thonglor police station have a reputation for integrity and proper behavior.  They live to protect and serve the citizens of their district and are prime examples of all that is decent and good about the Thai police force.   

 

That said, I am sure justice will be appropriately served in this matter and such an aberration will never happen again.
