Do you flaunt your wealth in Thailand?

 

Simple question, but of great import.

 

The question is:

 

a.  Do you find your life happier living in a place where people do not flaunt their wealth?

b.  Do you find your life happier living in a place where people hide their wealth, and live simpler lives even though they might have tons of money?

 

Here in Thailand, as accurately as I can see, most of those with money do not flaunt their wealth. 

 

Those without wealth are less subjected to the “in your face” flaunting of wealth by their neighbors.

 

Does this make for a happier society?

 

Let’s compare this to the USA, just for starters:

 

In the USA, the flaunting of wealth is what American society is all about.  What is the point of having riches if one cannot flaunt it, day and night.

 

Do you have a Gold Rolex?

Maybe this is OK....but....if you flaunt your Rolex, then.....

 

.....And If so, then this is in very bad taste because you should have purchased something less heavy, maybe.

 

 

Disparity of wealth in a society can be more easily tolerated if there is no flaunting.

 

So, let’s all do our best to not flaunt.

 

OK?

 

Because, despite what you might think…it is this lack of flaunting of wealth that makes life happier in Thailand, for both you and me.

The ones who don't have the money go into big debt and try to flaunt it.

Other areas of the country minimally.

I'm Aussie, RigPig, so that's a big NO, no flaunting from me. 

 

Children's mother did/does regularly, I hate it.

 

My girlfriend dresses casual, no bling, very little makeup, I dress shorts, T shirt and sneakers. 

 

Most of my friends are well off, they don't flaunt. 

 

Rolex and other high prices items stored in bank vault, safety box, never worn.

Nah ... have very basic house.  Don't think anyone is impressed with our MG ZS or Deco scooter, as inexpensive transport.

 

I dress for comfort, short, collared shirt (made by wife, her label) & sandals.  Pretty unimpressive, except for my handsome smile.

It's all relative.

 

I was in a restaurant with a guy once and I ordered a glass of wine and he thought I was being arrogant and "flaunting my wealth."

 

Because I guess where he comes from in hicksville, they only drink beer. 

 

I might buy a very very small gold coin pendant to wear around my neck. I think it's so small that it won't be perceived as flaunting wealth.

You do not flaunt your wealth here but it is very important (chiefly for Thais) to signal their social status. The two can easily be confused as one implies the other but not necessarily.

 

E.g. the choice of an E-class Mercedes Benz may appear to be a show of wealth but is more likely to be an indicator of status.

 

The graduation picture and degree from a government university displayed in a prominent position is all about status.

 

Status has a large bearing on how you are treated (again chiefly for Thais).

 

Wealth with zero status may potentially attract the wrong sort of friends.

I am a minimalist. I've never understood the need to impress family, friends and neighbors with any possessions I may have.

 

Irrelevant anyway, most of the stuff I buy is secondhand.

Loads of americans are head over heels in debt on credit cards where interest rates are aproaching 30%....but of course little johnny absolutely has to have the newest i phone every year.  Sadly most americans do not understand the difference between what they need and what they want....And i suspect applies to most other countries and the "flauntin" of "wealth" for many people.

 

As of the second quarter of 2024, the average American credit card debt was $6,329, which is a 6% increase from the same time in 2023.
