Is 20 kms out of the center of CM cheaper than in the farang areas of Pattaya? I would say almost certainly yes.

I prefer to be more or less in the city ,I don't like rural type areas especially if there is kangaroos etc around

About 6 months ago I lived down in the Khao Lak area, a few km back from the beach.  If I take off my house rental cost, then I was spending less than 5,000 a month on food, internet and utilities, (not because I could only afford 5k, but because I was interested to see what my monthly budget was).  I cooked my own food, (bought fresh from the local market), I did a lot of walking (maybe 5km+ each day (because I prefer to walk for health reasons, nut use a car or motorbike).  Life was simple, cheap and healthy!

The problem with cooking your own food is your still using electricity 

I'm thinking just buy a microwave 

I forgot about phone internet etc 

How do you poor guys like me live without Air conditioning

Ok just say I owned my own home there too

I still would be living on the same money right?

 

So what's the difference living say in Australia on $900 AUD a month and Pattaya/Philippines Asia/Thailand 

I'm sure there is a lot of Old age Aussie live on that as well as UK pensioners after their rent

At the farm me and my wife pluss our dogs can survive easily on 20k a month, and even have a beer or Two, and also visit restaurant twice a month. Basically living like many people do world around who are used to eat home lunch and dinner. 

 

But it doesn't leave much for holiday extraordinary epenses, budget or other necessary savings and insurance. 

 

Just had to change our aircon in or csr which set us back almost 7k, and also new tires I think was 18k. 

 

Pattaya and Jomtien is the poor man city, and I'm sure I could live there for 20k if I had to, but it would had killed my spirit.

 

Those low budget condominiums to noisy, and I need a view to keep peace in my mind.

 

Simple Farm life is a good life compared to stuck in a city, if you have space from neighbours.

Mainly the safety nets given to you as a Aus citizen

 

If you were really injured in Australia you would be treated at any ER

In Thailand you will need to show how you will pay BEFORE any real operations are done.

They will stabilize you at a govt hospital while you arrange your Go Fund Me & deteriorate

 

There are many SHTF scenarios where you would survive in your home country & not elsewhere

 

I am not saying you can't go live anywhere on your 900AUD/20k baht per month I am just saying reality can bite. It hurts a bit less where you have citizenship because they usually do take care of their own

It can be done, but you will pay a price either in terms of your diet, medical/dental care, modes of transportation, wardrobe, recreational activities, extent of travel, or your ability to recover from an unexpected property or casualty loss.

My first salary as a teacher was 20k.  In the province, not BKK. The apartment 2k plus water/energy.  You can definitely live on 20k.

I once forced myself to live on Baht 40,000 for a month, just for the experience, and this was over a decade ago. As a single man, it was not for me.

 

Nowadays,I have a very good life on less than Baht 40,00 a month, which does not include discretionary spending like hotels, road trips, holidays. But does include the daily running of a 4 bedroom house and 2 x cars.

 

Is Baht 20,000 a month doable, probably, but not for me.

I agree with what you wrote, but I don't think the issue is whether you can manage to live on 20K for a year or two long stint, but whether you can do it on an ongoing basis in retirement (10-20 years). I get the rural lifestyle: 2K row house, farmer's market on Tuesdays and Saturdays, mountain biking and shooting hoops at the local elementary school lifestyle, but over time other issues/"wants"/needs emerge which will likely make a 20K budget constraining, especially as you get older and may have more medical expenses. Maybe not true for everyone, but true for many.

Just bought a 45k new sofa for example.

The obvious issue is you would still need an ample emergency fund for when stuff out of your control happens.
