I tried explaining all that to a friend when they started trying to "get" Trump one way or the other. Impeachments and all the rest of the nonsense.  He wouldn't listen.  I think some on the left were so sure that they could ruin Trump's life and destroy every chance he had to ever be elected again, that they just didn't care.  They knew what they were doing was unconscionable, and they did it anyway.  That was their mission.
