A foreign woman took to TikTok to accuse a Subway store at Phuket International Airport of overcharging her after she bought three sandwiches for 3,000 baht. (£72).

The TikTok user, @naynaysully, posted a video on Wednesday, January 8, while standing in front of the Subway store at the airport. In the video, two security guards can be seen intervening, while a Subway employee is heard speaking to a superior on the phone. The woman captioned the video…

“What the scamming hell is going on here? They want £72 for three subs (sandwiches). Avoid Phuket Airport!”

However, the foreign woman did not specify the details of her order in the video. When asked by commenters to share a receipt, she claimed that staff had not provided one. She mentioned in the video that she added extra toppings to her sandwiches, prompting netizens to demand further clarification.

Some TikTok users defended the store, pointing out that Subway is generally expensive, unlike Thai street food. They also noted that prices at airport outlets are typically higher. If the foreigner had indeed added extra toppings, they argued, the cost might reasonably have risen to over 3,000 baht as she claimed.

In the second TikTok video, the woman explained that she had ordered three meal deals, each comprising a sandwich, a drink, and a cookie. Although she had enough money to pay, she refused to do so because she felt the price was excessive.

Airport’s miscalculation

She said she left the food behind to catch her flight but security guards and Subway staff reportedly pursued her, demanding payment. They eventually offered her a discount, reducing the price to 1,500 baht, which she agreed to pay. However, she claimed that she only received two sandwiches, without drinks or cookies.

The foreign woman said she later boarded her flight and vowed never to visit the Subway store at Phuket Airport again. Despite the incident, she described her overall experience in Thailand as positive, apart from this “Subway nightmare.”

Following the incident, Phuket Airport released an official statement confirming that the customer was charged according to the store’s price list. The airport detailed the order as follows:

  • Footlong meatball sandwich (574 baht) with extra roasted meat (180 baht) and three extra portions of cheese (180 baht): Total 934 baht
  • Footlong roasted chicken sandwich (454 baht) with added ham (180 baht) and three extra portions of cheese (180 baht): Total 814 baht
  • Footlong roasted chicken sandwich (454 baht) with added tuna (180 baht): Total 634 baht
  • Three drinks: 297 baht
  • Seven cookies: 273 baht
  • One bottle of drinking water: 35 baht

According to the airport, the total bill came to 3,152 baht. Nevertheless, the total cost based on the breakdown should have been 2,987 baht, leaving a difference of 165 baht. One netizen pointed out a discrepancy in the airport’s calculation, but the airport has not yet addressed this error or provided a further statement.

Well, they got her name and the flight details. An arrest might follow. And payment of course.

When I am headed to the airport, I bring a mixture of nuts, and a small bag of cereals.

I thought that everybody knew that the airport is not a place to dine.

I even bring a small bottle of water, that can be useful, well yes, up to the point when someone will confiscate it. People in uniform are al looking for small bottles of water in there. But they allow me to keep my snacks. 😊

Avoid Phuket Airport!

I have done  just that for 10 years after taking an airport taxi after being ushered there by an airport official.  Despite offering the female driver a printed Google map of my hotel's location, she drove about for 500 baht's worth before finding it.  The return journey (in the hotel manager's car) took UNDER two minutes.

Scam City.

You will stay away from Thailand now, wouldn't you?

Suvanaphumi airport (haven’t been to  Phuket for years) is the only airport in the world where I buy food, as it’s the cheapest by far, and has a great selection of fast food chains. Always look forward to my ‘take-home’ size blizzard from Dairy Queen. Have also occasionally bought Subway there, and it seems to be about twice the price of my local Subway at Jomtien, which makes it about the same price as a non airport Subway in Australia. I think that’s fair for an international airport. The complainant’s clearly very fond of cheese - 3 extra portions per sandwich?

I stopped over for a couple of hours in Phuket airport in December (flying Chiang Rai to Kuala Lumpur). I know airports are expensive, and I know Phuket is expensive compared to Northern Thailand but I was absolutely gobsmacked by the prices being charged for the simplest of foods.

That's the thing with subway you look at the board and say I want that and it has a price.

Then they ask you what you want in it? That doesn't actually make sense.

Good on her for standing up for herself. 6 offcials who can't speak English enforcing payment of a sandwich? All the constant media rubbish of "smart zones" and flower opportunities, and you have no tourist police in the airport??

Airport vendors need some scrutiny every now and then. Everyone in there is taking the piss.

Bottled water in phuket international is minimum 100-120 baht. In domestic it is normally 30.

The pharmacy there is selling simple little things like a sachet of gaviscon only stuck together in packs of 10 for over 200 baht. "I just need one". "No mister cannot".

First of all everyone has got to realise that the rents that shopkeepers have to pay are very expensive at airports and that is the same all over the world. Therefore they are have to charge more than normal. The lesson here for the whinging  women is to check the price before she orders including any extras so there are no problems like that. It's a pity that she didn't miss her flight while she was arguring.

High rent but massive footfall 18 to 24 hours a day

I go to that exact branch every time I fly out of Phuket.

Yes, it's a bit more than Subways in the street but there are reasons for this.

How this English woman could imagine that 'add this, and some more of that' wouldn't add up seems weird.

And jeeez she must have an appetite to add what she did.

Sadly, her accent suggests that she's from the lower classes on not far from my home.
