Who lives without family?

I was just watching a Pattaya YouTuber , a 60 something guy who had just retired to Pattaya in December after 35 years working in the government service in the UK 

 

He just made me cry as he said he spent Xmas day alone !

He has no family or should I say they have lost contact 

I actually laid on my lounge on my day off today crying watching the poor bugger saying his Xmas day in Pattaya was very lonely 

 

Never married from the UK ,lost contact with his brothers sisters etc over the years .

 

I wonder if Thailand is the RIGHT place for him to meet a genuine partner after his sadness so I wrote a post for him to go to the Philippines immediately 

 

He said all though he retired to Pattaya he is looking for a new place as he is has no one 

 

Anyway I don't want to open up a Pandora's Box but who here has no family and do you cope ok ?

I have almost no family and I don't miss a family.

I have a sister in another country. We have no problems with each other, but we live totally different lives. A message or two every couple of months is all the contact we have.

 

And about Christmas, etc. I avoid any special lunch or dinner or whatever events on those days. It's a day like any other day. If someone wants to celebrate it in company of people, I am sure he can go to church somewhere.

Personally, I am just fine without Christmas and family.

It would help this poor soul with a few more views and also give us a better picture what you talking about.

This forum is a business ,if he wants publicity he can contact the marketing department of the forum company rather than me open up a "Pandora's box"

So posting a link to his channel is not permitted by AN because it's a business?   What about the countless YT videos that are posted and linked to here?   If he didn't want publicity why would he be lamenting about his circumstances on his YT channel?

I'm assuming you are not in the same location otherwise you'd have arranged to meet up - still, it was nice of you to offer some advice and communication which probably meant a lot to him.

 

 

With regards to the question on family.

I'm from a very tightly nit family - being away has always been difficult and whenever possible, I have always travelled home twice per year....     Parents still alive, Sisters with their families still in the area - we communicate all the time and also have a good 'family group chat going'... 

 

... That said - I don't regret being away, though I do have regrets that my Son will never be as tight with his cousins as he has not grown up with them, though there is still a clear strong bond that only family can achieve.

 

I also have very tight friendship groups back in the UK, as I do here and over the years I've been very fortunate to see that 'group' overlap on many occasions and see 'both words' come together on various trips and holidays - its been very special to see the very close friends I've made in over twenty years of being here get on very well with the very close friends I grew up with and was at school with.

 

 

Though I like to spend much of my time 'out of the way' and alone (mostly late at night once everyone else is asleep !)...  to be truly alone would be horrific...

Everybody seems to have a different opinion about family. I feel very fortunate to have had a very good and healthy relationship with my folks while they were still around, and to have a very close relationship with all three of my sisters?

 

For me it makes life a lot richer. In addition I have a close relationship with my Thai woman's family who are absolutely wonderful people.

Not sure lately as i haven't looked nor care to but didn't that Dan fellow post all sorts of his YouTube videos while prancing around Pattaya? Has AN changed the rules or are they playing favoritism?

 

On topic..... I wish my parents as well as my sister (who passed last year) were still around to communicate with. I do have a brother I message and video with often (weekly at minimum). And I also keep in contact with cousins, nephews, and nieces. It's nice to have family, to some degree!

my relationship with my siblings is horrible.

the sibling rivalry is off the charts.

Xmas is extremely painful to tolerate.

one reason to move to thailand is to get away from sibling rivalry and Xmas. 

being alone is better than being surrounded by hostility.

and you can pop into a bar on Xmas ... you're never alone in thailand.

I'm aware of an American living in Bangkok, 1 of his brothers is a respected heart surgeon, a sister is a specialist dental reconstruction expert, she rebuilds mouths after massive damage in car accidents etc. Another brother is a household name in the US as a criminal prosecutor and another brother is a famous  mystery novelist. All of the US siblings are now very wealthy. All have serious advanced education degrees. 

 

The brother living in Bkk is a management consultant who has guided several Thai  western companies (operations in Thailand) back to success from the brink of  failure. He has a bachelor degree.

 

For many years most of the US siblings contingent have done a yearly siblings reunion in Bkk at great expense.

 

They never contact the brother living / working in Bkk but they have a couple of times ran into the Bkk guy in hotel lobbies / in restaurants etc., always generating much sarcasm and nasty comments about his job,  lack of fame etc. But they ask id he's OK, never buy him a meal or a drink.

 

Sometimes families suck.

Another example; my father's mother was a nasty ignorant old bitch, she gave my dad hell all of his life, she severely criticized everything he did or said,  she refused to allow him to go to school because she wanted his labor on the farm 24/7 (she did the same to half of dad's 8 siblings). 

 

At 20 years old he was illiterate, he met my mother a school teacher and by early 30's he had the equivalent of about 3 masters degrees. 

 

As a kid I spent very little time with grandma, most of that time I got bombarded with her nasty statements words about how bad my dad was, also his wife. 

 

At 20 years old I got called up for army service and went to the conflict in Vietnam. Grandma asked around and discovered she cold write letters to me in Vn. She send several letters, all focused on how bad my dad was.

 

Then I got the jackpot letter, she wrote "and what have you got to worry about, my sons went to a real war". I bundled all her letters and sent them home to dad.

 

Dad called his mother and said "I forbid you from ever writing more letters to my son. She responded, on the phone by saying "doesn't matter he's probably dead by now". 

 

Dad responded to her "this is the last time you will ever hear from me, and I disown you forever". He kept to his promise.

It's only gonna get worse as more and more lonely old farts relocate to Thailand for retirement.
