Hard to keep it a secret at the British Legion and other events like at the British Embassy, Hellfire Pass or Remembrance Sunday at the British Club etc. 😉

Perhaps, but then the ex soldiers are amongst their peers, not in a public place  like a bar in Pattaya. Their former work is (presumably) considered more "matter of fact" than revelling in former glories.

Never been in the SAS, but did get arrested by the Libyan secret police once. But i didn't know it at the time, or i would have shat myself. Only questioned for about an hour, guess my answers checked out, because I am still around.

When people say how difficult the SAS selection is, that is total nonsense, the Army Catering Corps is by far the most difficult, no-ones ever passed it!

It's been a while since I have initiated a post but given this is a community pub and don't get to a real one that much these days thought I would.

Last week I was talking with a buddy who has lived in Pattaya for a while, and we were discussing how many people profess to be or have been in the SAS who are living in or visiting Thailand.
I have heard people talk about being in the SAS myself not so much these days with less bar visits than I used to.
I am actually quite surprised there is anyone left in Hereford as they all seem to have migrated to Thailand.
This is by no means any disrespect to retired or serving military who I respect a lot, just wondered if anyone else has seen or heard the same on their Thai travels?

Bumped into a few here in my single bar-mongering days, even had one in the village where I used to live. Even when you tell them you're ex army yourself, they continue with their fallacy. They must genuinely have convinced themselves that it's true.

Oddly enough, I was on a contract in Libya in 1989 (oil related, nothing military) and 3 of us got called into the boss to be told we were being "let go" immediately. Within 2 hours we were flown back to Tripoli, paid off and given our air tickets to London, via Malta.

Back in UK, I tried to find out WHY and the contracting company said they wanted to know too but no one in the oil company would say anything other than "our faces didn't fit".

Given the politics of the day and the fact that the contracting company treated us fairly (all paid up and transported home), I took the view, in hindsight, that I may have had a lucky escape from something or other. I'd still love to know, but I guess I never shall  🤔

If it's British Army, asked them what their number was, you never forget it

Reminds me of an interview I had for a Middle East contract, which included accommodation and all meals.

I asked "What's the food like" - after a few seconds, the interviewer replied "It's OK until the chef gets hold of it".

He was correct - the most prized object on that camp was a bottle of HP sauce to add at least SOME flavour! 😩

I was stationed in the North Norway, and the chef at our camp, had been fired 3 times, but only one applied for the job.

Horrible food, terrible,

Every second guy drinking in a soi Buakhou bar is ex SAS. 😂

The others are rocket scientists, porn stars or bank robers

Can I just mention that in a previous career I was indeed a rocket scientist, but my efforts to establish a porn-star career with my colleague Candi has come to nought...
