Thaksin Shinawatra, the former prime minister of Thailand and de facto leader of the ruling Pheu Thai Party, announced plans to construct up to one million housing units for low-income Thai nationals. The announcement was made during a rally in Bueng Kan province.

The government recently launched the Home for Thais scheme and Thaksin stated that around 31 million people have shown interest in participating, with hundreds of thousands already registered. He made these remarks during a campaign event in Bueng Kan province, ahead of the February 1 provincial administration organisation elections.

Thaksin highlighted the demand for housing, noting that only about 7,000 units are currently being constructed. To meet this demand, he said the government plans to build at least 100,000 more units this year and another 100,000 next year, with the ultimate goal of constructing one million units.

He shared that he has been contemplating housing projects for low-income residents in Bangkok since his leadership of the Thai Rak Thai Party, the precursor of Pheu Thai. His vision includes constructing housing near the electric rail system, with trips costing no more than 20 baht. He also advocated for the expansion of Bangkok’s rail transport system to connect with other provinces.

Thaksin also addressed the rubber industry, claiming responsibility for overturning a Cabinet decision in 2003 to limit rubber farming. He argued for expansion, envisioning new markets and fairer prices, citing successful rubber-growing areas in Bueng Kan as evidence of his decision.

In addition, Thaksin pledged to intensify efforts against drug-related issues, aiming for prompt rehabilitation of drug addicts and stricter action against drug dealers. He warned that assets acquired through illegal drug activities, such as houses and cars, would be seized, and offenders would face imprisonment.

He concluded by mentioning future initiatives, including the next phase of the digital money handout scheme for individuals under 60, reported Bangkok Post.

Interested in what and registered for what ?

Some clarity would be nice.

Going to build , not built . It will be news when he puts his money where his mouth is . Will this be a donation or will it be a business/ profits

This is a repeat of the policy that he enacted in the early 2000's through the National Housing Authority (NHA).

It was wildly popular and massively oversubscribed. You can see it throughout Thailand. The housing is referred to as a "kankheha" and is usually either 3 or 4 storey numbered blocks or small houses.

By putting the right person in charge of the NHA, it also offers much opportunity for syphoning off of a certain percentage either to enrich oneself or to pay off political friends.

So, it is popular, resolves a public issue and great corruption opportunities, win-win-win.

Indeed, unfortunately the plase is only for lease for the former owner/s

I wonder what he's thinking sat in his cell?

Former Thai Social Development and Human Security Minister, Watana Muangsook, was sentenced to 50 years in prison for corruption related to the Baan Eua Arthon low-cost housing project. Initially found guilty in September 2020, Watana was convicted on multiple counts of corruption, with individual sentences totaling 99 years. However, under Thai law, the maximum imprisonment for such offences is capped at 50 years.

Another opportunity to scam goes begging?

Positive plans yet nothing but negative snide comments from the resident Mr T hate mob on AN.

Correct, they is one near me, known as Moo Bann Thucksin, Thucksin's village you paid 500 baht/month for 25 years and got your house.

When the coup come only half of the houses were built, that was then, still now a half derelict sight with half the houses still  left from then, the then military government just stopped work over night, anything Thucksin was just left. See photo, taken 4 years ago

Those chaps can’t vote so empty vessels make the most noise

The Thai people are the beneficiaries and that’s what’s most important. Way to go Mr Thaksin

The Baan Eua-Athorn housing project, with 7,500 house units planned and a Bt2.5-billion budget.

AKA BEA, Home with a Heart, or "One Million House Program".

I think this was launched in 2003?

Yes, a relatively higher-than-normal level of corruption on this one.

Thaksin re-recording all the old hits.

@bamnutsak

Yep, that was the one. Thanks.

Your map shows the projects in the Bangkok Metropolitan Region. Just for the others, it was nationwide.

If this ends up like the 10k baht for all Thais over 16 then not many will ever get homes
