Trump’s Jan. 6 Pardons Slammed as a 'Grotesque Display' of Power by Schiff

Sen. Adam Schiff (D-Calif.) has sharply criticized President Donald Trump for issuing broad pardons to nearly all individuals charged in connection with the January 6, 2021, attack on the U.S. Capitol. In an interview on MSNBC’s "Inside with Jen Psaki," Schiff described the move as "obscene" and "a grotesque display" of presidential power.

“It’s obscene. It’s a grotesque display of his new power as President to pardon these 15- or 1600 people, which I have to imagine includes people that committed violent assaults on law enforcement,” Schiff said. “It really is a terrible way to begin, but not a surprising way to begin the new administration.”

On Monday night, Trump announced that he had granted approximately 1,500 “full, complete, and unconditional pardons” to individuals charged for their roles in the Capitol riot. A total of 1,583 people have faced charges related to the attack. Trump justified the sweeping pardons while signing orders in the Oval Office, stating, “What they’ve done to these people is outrageous.”

Among those granted clemency were members of the Proud Boys and Oath Keepers, who had been charged with conspiring to disrupt the peaceful transfer of power following the 2020 presidential election. The sentences of many were commuted to time served. Notably, Enrique Tarrio, the former national chairman of the Proud Boys, who was serving a 22-year prison term — the longest sentence handed down in connection with the attack — received a full pardon.

Schiff criticized the decision to pardon Tarrio, calling it emblematic of Trump’s leadership style and his ties to far-right groups. “It is rather fitting, sadly, that among his very first acts in office is to give a pardon to a white nationalist leader like that,” Schiff remarked. “To pardon him, I think, is very symbolic of where the President is coming from. It, to me, harkens back to his statement, vis a vis the Proud Boys, years earlier, where he said, stand back and stand by, or something along those lines.” Reflecting on Trump’s latest move, Schiff concluded, “Well, apparently, he had their back after all.”

Rep. Jamie Raskin (D-Md.), another member of the former House select committee investigating the January 6 attack, also weighed in, telling CNN that the Trump administration “has a lot of explaining to do” regarding the clemency extended to the Capitol riot defendants.

These actions came just hours after outgoing President Joe Biden issued preemptive pardons for members and staff of the House January 6 select committee, including Schiff and Raskin, in the final moments of his presidency.

Trump's pardon is a slap in the face for every law enforcement officer who was trying to protect the Capitol on January 6.

The Secret Service is supposed to protect Trump. What kind of message does it send to them?

It sends the message that he will rule as an authoritarian strong man in as much of a dictatorial manner as he can get away with.

Consider his awesome power today.

He can now order murders of opponents telling the hit men he will pardon them, and be fully immune from prosecution himself for the murder orders (thanks to SCOTUS which he owns) as long as the orders are done as part of his presidential actions. FACT.

Oathkeepers and Proud Boys like to boast they are armed and ready. Trump would do well to remember the Second Amendment works for his opponents too.

That's the whole purpose of the Second Amendment, is it not? To prevent tyranny?

Pelosi's the one that threw the LEOs under the bus, deliberately under manning the capitol security that day, to get the exact result that they got.

She wanted it to happen.  She needed it to happen.  Trouble is, it just wasn't enough to overcome 2 very weak candidates.  Disastrously weak.

Twisting January 6 into a Pelosi conspiracy is a sign of tin hat delusion.

IIRC Pence asked Trump to call out the National Guard, Trump refused.

You need help.

Wow, just wow. So it was all a conspiracy theory to make the morons riot and invade the Capitol. And to think there are people who actually believe that and that they walk amongst us. Scary.

Biden is issuing pre-emptive pardons to protect innocent people from persecution. None have been indicted for anything.

Trump is issuing pardons to violent criminals already in jail.

See the difference?

But to pardon someone, doesn't it mean they have done 'something' to be pardoned for?

He already sent the message. No more DEI. Melissa MacCarthy need not apply.

Give it a rest. A few blokes in fancy dress protesting. The sentences were well over the top.

It's not like they were gun toting, coke snorting, hooker using degenerates like the son "good ol' Joe" pardoned.

The Libs need to get over it. Trump is in power now, and he isn't messing around this time.

REPORTER: You would agree it's never acceptable to assault police officers?

TRUMP: Sure

REPORTER: Among those you pardoned is a guy who used a stun gun on a police officer. Why does he deserve a pardon?

TRUMP: Well, I don't know

America is one hell of a screwed up country.

and yours is not ?

Trump is just being Trump and this will an interesting 4 years. I was hoping he wouldn't pardon "all" the rioters, except 14 Proud Boy members that were released from prison and I assume will be pardoned in the future.

This is going to be a fun ride!
