Can you go to a government hospital for a blood test including A1C, PSA or even better HCI?

Very interesting question 

In Australia we get blood tests free so I generally have one every 8 weeks 

But in Thailand recently I paid I think around 1400 baht

I am pretty sure you can do that, and likely it will be cheap.

Or you do it in a private hospital, and depending on the hospital it will still not be expensive.

One difference it that in the government hospital you likely will wait for hours, and you better speak and read Thai.

There is a clinic that does path tests MRT huay kwang. It's next to the Ganesha 'temple'. Get a battery of standard tests only b1300.

OK, I am not answering your direct question, but you can get blood tests done also at clinics. I use N-Health in Pattaya, they have decent prices and there is no charge for seeing a doctor. So if you know how to interpret the results, it is a good deal.

I'm aware of the overpriced N-Health, and the much cheaper Lifecare lab, which is actually part of N-Health I believe.

But I find the Lifecare environment not really clean.

I had every month a blood test, for over 10 years, at the Military Hospital in Nakhon Ratchasima.
The blood test was performed on orders from the doctor trough a "blood test sheet".
It included everything you asked for.
But:
- You needed to get an order from a doctor.
- The blood test was not free.

You cannot go into a government hospital and just demand a blood test. You have to consult a doctor there and the doctor has to order it.

 

Lower level hospitals (e.g. community hospitals) may have  limited lab facilities and nto be able to do the tests you mention.

 

Simplest thing to do is to just use an independent lab.

Yes you can, although, reading Sheryl's reply, that may be location dependent.  At worst, you'll find out before hand, if lucky and you ask, or, you go to register, then they'll tell you ... no or yes, here's you Q #.

 

Registering at hospitals, to be seen same day, is a very early experience, and the Q can be hours, before the registration office even opens.   Welcome to the Thai public hospital system.

 

But hey, you're there, so tell them you want to see a doc, to order blood tests.   Only difference is, you may or may not have wasted a day, a morning, and chances are, you may not get the test done, that day.  All location dependent, at a guess.

 

Before doing that, going to hospital, make sure you do an overnight fast, nothing but water after 1800 hrs the evening before.

 

Or ... actually go to a doc, and they will refer you to get the tests you want.  Ask Sheryl suggests.  May depend how easy or convenient that is for you.  Do you speak Thai, no necessary, or do you have a Thai partner/translator, for ease.

 

My experiences.   Udon Thani has health check ups, though don't know if need appointment or referral, or can just show up.

 

Udon Thani Military Hosp. (govt ) has health check ups, no appt needed.  Have done there, just showed up, no appointment, and they check all on a list, and you are welcome to add tests.  This a long time ago, though doubt if it changed.

 

PKK Hosp, that I use now, don't know, never asked, as I simply go to my GP, who also runs the night clinic at the hospital, and ask for what ever I want.  He give me an appointment date/time referral.

 

Night clinic cost foreigner 1200 baht that new, but beats Q'ing up all day to see a doc, to get the same referrals, maybe.  My GP will order anything I ask for, although I'm not unrealistic, like our AN hypochondriacs are.

 

OR .. if in Bangkok, pop into Camillian Hosp, no appt needed at about 0800 hrs, and doe a full health check up there.

I have a blood test every year as part of the regime of diabetes treatment and monitoring in my local government hospital. Without going back over my itemized bill, I don't know the exact price  but it is not particularly expensive. The results are back in an hour or so, printed out in English.

 

Go to the hospital out patients, see a doctor (you will have to wait), explain what you want, he/she will send you to the laboratory room. They will speak enough English.

I'm in Pattaya and am registered at Banglamung and Somdet hospital in Sriracha, and have use Queen Sirikit hospital a few times as well n the past.

My previous blood test were done at Lifecare lab, but I'm not impressed by the cleanliness of that lab.

AFAIK I've only had blood tests in a government hospital as an inpatient.

 

I use Mengrai Labs in Chiang Rai. A full blood examination ( FBE ) is 1200 baht. Doctor is not needed, they email me the results in about 90 minutes.

If by Somdet you mean the Red Cross Hodpital, they would be able to fo PSA anf Hb1Ac.  I have no idea ehst HCI is?

 

You will have to see doctor first to get the tests ordered.

Thanks, yes I think it is the red cross hospital.

 

I must have been confused when posting the OP, it should read PHI test, which is 3 times more accurate than a PSA test

Yep and depending on where you're living it will be almost free.  I did a complete blood count, cholesterol, testosterone, blood sugar, liver, kidney  tests and the bill was around 600 baht.  I brought in a list of what i need in English and also in Thai. They may have to send off the blood to Bangkok or where ever but that usually only takes a few days.

 

The hospital doctor was worthless but all I was interested was the raw data.  Next time I'm going to see if they will email the results so I don't have to meet with the doctor.

So did you have the test before seeing the doctor, and only seen him for the results?

Yes but I have also met with doctors.  Where I live now the hospital is tiny and rarely visited by westerners.  Never seen a westerner at this hospital.  Meeting with a doctor wouldn't be to problematic but a waste of time IMO.  I would just show up and stumble through the process and in the end I bet it only takes 15 minutes if you don't have to see  a doctor and an hour if is required.  

 

Hmm, now that I'm giving it some thought - I think the doctor I met with might have been upset he didn't order the tests.  He kept asking why I was getting certain tests and seemed perturbed.  Makes sense because that would be the standard process here and in the west.  Meet with a doctor and tell him the tests you want done would be my recommendation 🙂

Good luck but I think Sheryl is correct in regards the required doctor visit.  I did not meet with a doctor and got the results but I have a feeling this was only because the staff was scared of the hansum farang 🙂 and didn't follow the usual process.
