Icelandic man gets his face busted after falling into Pattaya drain

An Icelandic tourist suffered painful facial injuries after tumbling into an uncovered drainage hole on a hazardous Pattaya footpath—yet another grim reminder of the city’s crumbling infrastructure.

 

The accident occurred around 1am yesterday, February 6 along Pattaya Second Road. The tourist, left bleeding from facial wounds, was treated at the scene by Sawang Boriboon Rescue Foundation before being rushed to a local hospital, said a spokesperson.

 

“The hole was concealed by garbage, rocks, and leaves.”

 

The tourist added that the 1.5-metre-wide pit had a raised edge that sent him sprawling. According to locals, the hazard has been a lurking danger for years.

 

“We’ve seen numerous tourists injured here,” one resident said, frustrated by the lack of action.

 

 

The dangers don’t stop there. Residents pointed out additional risks along the same walkway, including exposed metal studs from removed light poles and narrow paths often blocked by parked vehicles, forcing pedestrians into traffic.

 

Despite officials from the Pattaya Mayor’s office inspecting the site later that morning, no immediate repairs were made. The lack of accountability has sparked outrage.

 

“These conditions are ruining Pattaya’s reputation as a tourist hotspot,” a local shopkeeper warned.

 

City officials have promised to escalate the matter but with no clear timeline for repairs, both tourists and locals remain at risk, reported KhaoSod English.

I have been coming to Pattaya for over 20 years.  There are many areas in Pattaya that have never had trash cleaned up in that time.  Rename Pattaya to Trash City.

Trash pretty much everywhere around, besides  the disgusting smell in most of the little streets , which doesn't seem to bother the locals at all.

Greetings from Pattaya! Yesterday I visited Koh Larn... On a wooden ferry built out of goffer wood.. 😂😂. I visited Tien Beach... accessed via a raised concrete path... The path is just wide enough for two people to walk past each other... But 2 to 3 meters above rocks! 😂😂😂😂. No fence. No nothing! 

 

Thailand is can be a very dangerous place to visit. In Mexico I was always vigilant about crime. Here in Thailand it's all about falling.. tripping and staying well away from adventure...things break, sink and catch fire on a regular basis here 🤣🤣🤣🤣

Please include me as one of those who is outraged. This is not an isolated instance. Many of my friends, including myself, have had accidents because of lack of road/pavement repairs. It's ridiculous to think that Pattaya Beach has recently earned three prestigious awards, spotlighing its oustanding beauty and commitment to sustainable tourism practices. When it comes to road/pavement maintenance, Pattaya is a dump!

That's hilarious. Outrage! lol Ok.... Yeah, right, as though anyone believes that. How many decades go by with no change, yet people respond with outrage? It has been exactly the same since my first time in Thailand some 25 years ago and I'm sure it was the same long before I ever came along. If it bothers them so much, why don't they do something about it? Oh... maybe because it doesn't really outrage them so much.🙄
I guess it's Thai style virtue signaling.

It has been decades. I almost fell in one on a Bangkok sidewalk back in 1999.

Obviously in Pattaya wearing a full face helmet is required even when walking on the footpaths.

Pattaya is one big trip hazard! So many changes of levels on the streets. Some of the steps up to the shops are quite high. Cables and pipes across the walk, and remains of old fittings left to trip over.

    Pattaya Second Road has some of the worst sidewalks of the major roads in Pattaya.  There are sections that have no sidewalks at all, or very narrow, utterly useless ones--and this includes some of the nicer parts of the street in the area of Hard Rock Hotel and Centric Sea.  Private industry is doing its part--with new hotels and other new businesses, and the renovating of old properties happening on a large scale.  The city, as always, is doing what it's best at--going to take a look, shaking its head, and then doing nothing.   Parking should be eliminated on both sides of the road and wider sidewalks constructed, with shade trees.

I have nearly hurt myself in all locations in Thailand from holes in the footpaths, but I found walking around Tachilek 10 times worse, there is a corner in Huahin down by the wet market that has loose tiles that squish up water if it's been raining, they've been like this ever since I came here in 2003
