According to this blogger, Philippines is getting more dangerous.

Crime is even happening in broad daylight as criminals are not afraid of consequences.

They wait for parked cars at red lights in broad daylight.

It's not just petty pickpocketing. They seem to be not hesitant to use violence.

And the reason, according to this girl, that they are brazen and commit crimes in broad daylight is because of a conspiracy where crooked cops are colluding by greasing their pockets with these stolen goods.

Avoid Philippines?

If you listen to vloggers might as well stay at home, triple lock the front door and wrap yourself in cotton wool.

A friend just spent three weeks there. Experienced traveler and had a great time. No issues.

yes, but living long-term / retiring there increases risk.

she claims crooked cops are in on the crimes ie getting kickbacks. that's the scary part, if it's true. or maybe she is exaggerating to get more clicks on her youtube channel?

Still a fun place to go. The only place in Asia where everyone is getting laid. The typhoons make it impossible for the country to function during that season

thailand is fun enough.

cambodia has angkor wat, which might be worth a visit. and it's safer.

philippines has nothing that thailand doesnt have and it's not worth the risk for me.

i'll take a pass on philipines.

Been there loads, never had any problems, everyone was polite and friendly far more so than the Thai people.

I guess statistically speaking, you won't have any issues.

Even though the crime might be worse than Thailand?

Again though, do I care if the people there are slightly more polite than the Thais and the water is slightly more crystal blue?

Is politeness over-rated?

I see no reason to go there.

she doesnt specify any particular location

A place like Angeles City does attract low life and corrupt officials but elsewhere no issues.

It's just a different place to visit to see different things. There are pluses and minuses.

They have a lot of stunning beaches and mountain hikes. The women are attractive and open minded.

The food is so so. Not as good as Thailand but you won't starve. Takes a little more searching to eat well.

Accommodation is not as good value as Thailand.

For retirement and permanent residence though Thailand has to be better. Better infrastructure and a lot better medicare.

Also, met a crazy Filipino back home.

He fled the country over 20 years ago because he tried to make a power grab for the local mayor position in his village and the mayor had hitmen looking for him.

And he kept bragging about how he owned a gun.

So that also left a negative impression about the place.

Every big city worldwide has it's share of crimes. Many think America has crime all over every day and it's a dangerous place, yet millions never experience any of it living there all their lives. Staying off the streets at night in certain parts of big cities makes it a lot easier to avoid problems. Exposing yourself to the same is asking for trouble. I was in NYC a hundred times at night and never saw anything besides the biggest rat I ever saw. The same for San Antonio and Houston. <deleted> happens everywhere, including in the country areas. Thailand has islands that have been problematic for tourists yet hundreds visit there and never have any problems. It's just bad luck unless you expose yourself in an area at night by yourself that's known for criminal activity. Daylight crimes also happen, as it says here, but most will never see it happening. Stay in crowds, travel in groups, don't flash cash, insult others, and walk away from confrontations unless self defense is required.
