Veteran AN members may recall the feckless Karen Smith and Patricia Cahill who got caught at Don Muang in the early 90s with 20+ kg of heroin in their baggage. Their bags were so overweight they were denied boarding the first time around (I think not enough cash to pay for excess baggage) so came back the next day ...

Cahill got out in 3 years, young and pretty, does not apply in this case!

She is lucky she never made it to Singapore. Death penalty there. I just wonder how people think they can smuggle drugs. A village is missing its idiot

Many people do it successfully.

That is why it is easy to find drugs everywhere.

Big bucks and a life of luxury for the brave.

This woman may have been unaware of what is in the bag. Yes, it happens.

We all would like to believe that, i.e. an older innocent women not knowing that someone packed her bags for her, but one has to question, was that person who packed her bags on an earlier flight out to meet her at the airport or elsewhere.

Things don't always appear how they seem, age doesn't always hide innocence, that or there is still a huge low life out there.

(In the old days, it was common for the gang arranging the smuggling to send 3-4 people at once, and rat out one of them to make it easier for the others to get through.)

So they don't do this anymore?

Authorities at Phuket International Airport apprehended an American woman attempting to smuggle 4 kilograms of the drug “ice” (methamphetamine) en route to South Korea via Singapore. She is now facing legal action.

Lucky lady!!!

It makes no sense that 4.3kg of drugs would cause her bag to be overweight, or that packs of bedsheets weighing about 1kg - a typical weight for a set of king size sheets - would have aroused suspicion, so there was almost certainly something else going on here.

All luggage is screened. Hidden bags detected and found suspicious. Taken out and drugs found. No conspiracy theories needed.

Wondering what was triggering off this "job" for an elderly caucasian lady ..... She can consider herself lucky as in Singapore, if caught, it would have meant mandatory death sentence - as in Malaysia and Indonesia.

I think I'd rather be put to death than to rot in a Thai prison.

The bigger difference being that I suspect she may be able to buy her way out of a Thai prison sentence.  But not a Singapore execution.

Ice Ice Baby.  Enjoy you're time in prison. Lucky you got caught in Thailand.  Singapore hangs drug traffickers.

Hanging be better than Thai goal. At her age she's stuffed.

To try and get away with that, this woman must have the same IQ as a UK Labour party politician

Or Donald Trump!!

I am sure this would have been in checked in luggage, quite bulky for carry on and open to much more scrutiny via transit through Singapore. Her check in luggage would have been picked up at final destination and at best in Singapore maybe only an explosive trace test.

Check in luggage is analysed by xray machine and only if outside parameters preset in xray machine would it come up for further scrutiny by security staff. It is highly unlikely her bag  would have been scrutinised if it only held clothes, sheets and drugs in Bangkok. However at final destination could have undergone secondary screening and dogs prior to going on luggage carousel and she could have been chosen for inspection exiting immigration area.
