Pai Police Arrest 4 Foreign Tourists for Smoking Marijuana on Walking Street

Featured Replies

I don't understand what this is about  Thailand legalised marijuana, now fines people for smoking it... What law did these guys break, that Thais don't.

  • Big police crackdown nationally to "maintain order". Smoking cigs, smoking dope and all vaping shops temporarily closed yet the high daily death rate on the roads remains and people still riding witho

  • Pai is not the place to be... They will notice soon and than they complain.... On the other hand there are much worse things the police should take care of... simple.. black smoke fuming cars, no helm

  • Like the old cigarette butt trap in BKK. A Thai could discard the butt anywhere even if standing next to a cop but a foreigner will get the Bt2000 fine.

His mate Dutertes was arrested today as he stepped off the plane for his role in overseeing over 6000 extra judicial killings. Be nice to see Teflon Thaksin face similar charges.

would have to take purachai down with him.

it is not about marijuana, it is about foreign misbehavior.

Tourist police have nothing to do with the roads

So  again it's pick on foreigners, doing what thais also do.

I’m planning on going to Kho Samui for a week.  I’ll be traveling from BKK.  I wonder if my e-cig will get confiscated in security before take-off?

I doubt it but I'd be very careful about having a puff.

One of the very few places in the world where this type of violation is punishable by arrest.

Absurd.

What have tourist police got to do with it. These guys are BIB. Outside of a 711 with a friend the other day and he was having a cig. Some Thais warned us about police crackdown on smoking in public places. Same police that for the majority of time ignore the fact that some people riding bikes aren't wearing helmets. Again nothing to do with tourist police.

Perhaps, but Thais on the street smoking pot is quite rare, whereas in my travels, i see foreigners doing the same daily.

That is not to say Thais don't smoke weed. I smell weed often as I ride my bike through Thai neighborhoods, but on a busy public street, it is always a foreigner holding the joint

Well yeah, but there is likely less stink from all of the inconsiderate selfish pigs smoking cigarettes with no regard whatsoever around people who like and deserve to breathe clean air, especially in restaurants or other large crowds. Smokers, you can do as you will, but letting it blow into others' faces without a care in the world is disgusting. It's the same with marijuana, although it doesn't stink like cigarettes. I'm going to get a can of ƒɑrt spray and cut loose from now on every time it happens. No such thing as a no ƒɑrting area. Nothing illegal about that. If you're addicted to nicotine Switch to vapes. Vapes don't stink. No excuses. A ƒɑrt spray storm is about to blow in.

Other than a bit of a belly the farang looks fairly well put together and appears to be a quality tourist- matching colors, shirt fits well and tucked in, crisp shorts with a belt.  Can't see a watch but I bet it matches the belt.  But looks can be deceiving, in reality he's a Marijuana addict.

i reckon you need to raise your standards

The road safety part is pretty self explanatory, no? They're bothered by this one annoying thing (smoking weed in public) but totally unbothered by the endless daily traffic violations. I'd rather have people smoking weed in public than getting blasted in the face with diesel smoke when I'm on my bike, and yes this happens nearly every day at least once. Police seem fine with that even though it's technically illegal too.

Personally, I’d rather have both laws enforced. And actually, I’d have no problem with all laws being enforced uniformly and consistently nationally. I’d lose some personal freedoms, but maybe life would be safer for everybody

They tried that on me once back in the 90's.........outside Nana Hotel......I stood still, listened to him waffle, though I can speak Thai, I pretended not to. Wen He finished and was demanding 2,000 Baht, I leant into him and said,"I do not F**king smoke you pri*k.......and walked off leaving Him just a little peed off.

Spot on. These people are idiots with no respect. I'm not sure there's anywhere in the world you can just walk around smoking a joint whenever or wherever you want.

What are you on?

4 foreigners smoking weed, and thus bothering others, got fined, and what do you bring to the equation: Thaksin and road safety?
Are you feeling ok?

The last time Thaksin initiated a crackdown on drug use over two thousand people were killed, many of them entirely innocent.

I believe that it is illegal to smoke weed in public. Routinely ignored by all and sundry alike, to the extent that you don’t even know it’s illegal

Exactly what I did but unfortunately the market has been closed down for now nation wide. Trying to protect kids from vaping. Those kids who now are more than likely addicted to nicotine to some extent will now buy cigs if they can't get hold of a vape. This is once again a knee jerk reaction to that 14 year old girl dying a couple of weeks ago. I still don't understand how a 12 year old girl can vape so much in two years that her lungs fail. That's a lot of vaping in a day, a week, a month, a year, two years. Very expensive. A very isolated incident that has closed down the entire market (for now). Vaping should be legal.

It won't be legalised while those in high places continue to support the sale of cigarettes manufactured by the Thai Tobacco Monopoly.

you are correct, but then no one is arguing that. what is your point?

and why the about face? Perhaps you should decide what it is you are trying to say

So, much the same as the helmet law illegal not to wear  but usually enforced on foreigners, because they have money to pay fines

Just clarifying, because I haven't seen the law  that makes it illegal.... That's my "point."

His war on drugs has nothing to do with fining 4 unruly tourists.

Thais have somewhere legal to smoke it - their home. It's illegal to smoke cigarettes let alone weed in hotels. Other than the dispensaries, the law forces tourist smokers out on to the streets. You'd think the cops would make an exception of Pai!

Agree. They sprout health issues and protecting children and youth but as you rightly point out it's about profits and taxes. I'll guarantee there's been a spike in cigarette sales since this huge vape crackdown started last week.

Must of needed the money to replenish the coffee and tea jars it’s normally not wearing helmets where they make the coin!

You'll find a BIB crackdown on helmet compliance for Thais on or just after Thai payday. It's tea money time of the month.
