Trump reverses new tariffs threat on Canada after Ontario rescinds electricity charges

President Donald Trump backed down from an extraordinary trade war escalation Tuesday that had threatened a massive surge in tariffs on Canadian steel and aluminum and new tariffs on Canadian electricity. In turn, Ontario paused surcharges on electricity to US customers.

After the back-and-forth tariff threats that sent markets sharply lower for a second day Tuesday, US Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick, Canada’s Minister of Finance Dominic LeBlanc and Ontario Premier Doug Ford said they would meet Thursday to renegotiate the free trade treaty known as the USMCA.

Ontario agreed to suspend its 25% surcharge on electricity exports to Michigan, Minnesota and New York. President Donald Trump earlier on Tuesday threatened a 50% tariff on the country’s aluminum and steel, a sharp escalation in the budding trade war with Canada in retaliation for Ontario’s export surcharge. But Trump later signaled he would back down.

Could Trump's plan fail in a spectacular fashion?

Oxymoron. Trump doesn't plan, every time he fails to achieve an orgasm he takes another step to destroy our World. This is why Trump 2 is so much worse than Trump 1.  And also explains why he has so many followers "Birds of a feather flock together".

Not accurate? Or simply not distorted?

I'm not a billionaire, but never once in my life have I ever, for even one second, experienced a reality in which I had to face the world truly alone and without a safety net. To be sure, I'be been in situations where I was  totally broke,as when I was a starving law student, but that was my own doing, and I could have ended that situation at a moment's notice.  So in that regard, I can see clearly. I can see things the way Musk and others see it.  Anyway, those people have no evil intent, as far as I can tell.  I'm sure it must seem as if they do to many people, though.  They're burning Tesla's. They're firebombing Tesla dealerships. As if that will hurt Musk in the long run.  A real opportunity for investors, though.

I think we are sayng the same thing except for intentional harm, primarily from trump but musk has his sights set on other gains for his business and is playing those cards. You cannot tell me that the vindictive actions trump has taken against any and all that disagreed with him, corrected him or were doing their job and it affected him is not intentionally meant to harm those people. He is a classic narcissist with visions of grandeur and is not fit to be president.

Should waste and fraud be eliminated yes, do you slash and burn all areas of the government, economy and global presence at the same time? Absolutely not and it is already coming back on him and the USA.  Both parties were involved in putting the USA at the level and size of government and spending so its not just the Dems or lefties as many trumpers like to say. both parties had a hand at getting the US to where it is now so they both shame the blame.

He should host a daily game show on Fox Business, where he has two spinning wheels, one with countries, one with a percentage.

He could have Maria Bartoromo spin the wheels. And voila, Brazil gets a 20% blanket tariff.

We love what he is doing and elected him for it. I wish he would turn the dogs loose on them all. Payback is a Medevac.

Of course both parties share the blame. Wasn't it Ronald Reagan who first thought of "Starving the Beast"?  At least that was the plan.  Ask David Stockman.  Anyway, voodoo economics aside, Reagan soon changed his tune.  And ever since, the plundering of the federal treasury has continued.  Trillions flying out the door, much of for nebulous causes.  If you put everyone in congress in jail who somehow lined their pockets in the process, would there be any of them left?

Thats correct but it goes back farther than Regan. I see you avoided the other issue of intentional harm.

You've already established your love for him multiple times in your posts. Apparently you're not a long term guy if you think what he's doing is right and advisable. Seems your more short-sighted and ignorant of the repercussions that have already started. But we expect that from you and several other on here.

You can play the short term clown or you can look at the long term effects tariffs will have, make US products more attractive and save and create US jobs. Not to mention fill US coffers with tariff money.

No it won't 'make US products more attractive and save and create US jobs' - at least not in any substantial way. There is a reason US industries and companies import products, particulalry raw materials from Canada, likw steel, aluminium, minerals, copper, etc.

It's because US manufacturers of raw materials closed shop when everything was cheaper to make and ship from China. Canada was the next best choice (for steel/aluminium), so they imported from there. The US steel/aluminium manufactures cannot quickly upscale production to meet demand, so while they try hard, and hire a few more hands, imports are still needed at 25-50%. That doesn't make US final products more attractive at all. It makes them more expensive.

Finally, on the notion of filling US (treasury) coffers with more money. Sure, that will happen. And where do you suppose it will go? To rebuild the US's 1950s infrastructure (Interstate highways, bridges, airports, schools, etc. or better social security and public health care)? Of course not. Trump will turn it into more tax cuts - which mean little to nothing to the majority if they're making 15-20 bucks an hour in some service sector job.
