By retracting foreign aid, President Trump could make tuberculosis untreatable again.

PEPFAR  was a program launched by the Bush administration. It has been extraordinarily successful in suppressing the spread of HIV and tuberculosis. Trump/Musk has dismantled PEPFAR.

Why do some posters on this forum think that The US is responsible for everything that happens on the planet?

If it's as serious as the OP suggests then other countries can front up with enough of the readies to make up for the US dropping out. There is enough money out there, except it's been stolen by rich people. Go ask them for some, why don't you?.

As for HIV, the easiest disease to avoid- don't have sex with strangers without a condom, don't use dirty needles for your drugs and don't marry or have children with men that have unprotected sex with prostitutes.

Up to you.

If it were that deadly, we would have all died of it by now.

How so ?
Its not our responsibility to take care of the world. We're actually putting America first for the first time in a very long time.
If its so important to you then you open up your wallet.

Here I thought the thread was going to be about the woke mind virus.

When they might have to pay it's always someone else's problem.

And that throwing American tax money is the only solution.

Take Twitter (X) as an example.  Musk eliminated 80% of the employees, cut overhead by about the same, and still delivers a better product.  He got rid of the cliques working at odds to the company's goals.  That's what needs to happen across the gub'ment.  Get rid of the cliques working against the interests of the American citizenry.

On an aside, I'd bet the program was riddled with DEI and gender pandering.  At a huge cost and deleterious effect.  It needs to be reconstituted without all that.

It's kind of like the research the US is doing to alter the path of asteroids, as who wants to be a dinosaur? Now I'm sure Botswana or Bangladesh are not paying their "fair share" in terms of asteroid path alteration, and yet they would benefit if the US is successful in developing that technology, but the US would see some benefit it it can do the needful. Same with TB and other dangerous diseases, viruses and bacteria.

I know this is a difficult concept for those suffering from curmudgeon-ness, but give it some thought.

It is, it’s a derived tangent of it.

Treating TB is a FOOLS ERRAND.

I just hope you do not think this is a good strategy.

Also, whatever Trump does, despite what you might like to believe, will...

NOT affect the outcome much, if at all.

What is needed is a vaccine for TB.

TB drugs are gradually and surely losing their efficacy.

Stay informed on this topic, is my advice.

And then, donate your money to the most promising VACCINE RESEARCH Projects you can find.

And, no need to thank me for this VERY SOUND ADVICE....

By looking out for the world, we greatly enhanced our position and influence. All that is disappearing. Insular Don is destroying all that. America is on the decline, and he is precipitation that decline.

Life is not always about the self. Granted, it is for Don. But, small mindedness is his M.O.

It is called leadership and it is called moral conviction, neither of which Trump knows anything about.

No we didn't. We became a slush fund for the entire world, everyone has their hand out and now that the funds are cut off they're losing their minds. Too bad
America is always just about the first to respond when countries are in need and we always give the most. Time for that to end.
You know who comes to help us when we're in need ?  Thats right, almost nobody.

The world can take care of itself, just like we should be doing

A principle reason the US has historically funded such research in many global locations is that institutions such a Universities that receive grants and have fee paying students undertake the work is that the results become the property of the US.

It's not just the US that provides funds to either find a cure or prevent the spread of these diseases. Many other countries do so as well.

In fact it is  beholden of most governments to do so to protect their own citizens against future outbreaks, and for the US to stop such aid is to leave it's own citizens at risk of exposure. It only takes one person to bring a disease into a country, and it doesn't have to be an immigrant.

Tuberculosis can ruin many young lives, and I certainly wouldn't like to see it take hold again.

Can you imagine how bad your life must be to worry about Trumps effect on TB, and then  go to your fav internet echo chamber to screech madly with your fellow sufferers, so that your individual paranoia just feeds off the other obsessed paranoiacs causing your wails of fear and terror to be magnified into a crescendo of hysterical screaming Trump will kill us all, hes killing us, Oh my god, we are gonna die Trump trump trump trump.

As Chomsky always says (or said before his most recent stroke): You can read about it. All the information is available on the internet. Or, maybe listen to Gates and his foundation.  He is pushing the vaccine route to reduce illness and improve health around the world.

We need much more work and investment on vaccines.

Problem is that once you have a vaccine, then long-term drug therapy is no-longer needed.

Vaccines can be subsidized by the government, and then people are far less likely to become cash cows for Phara Companies, once vaccinated.

Trying to treat long-term illness like TB through drug therapy is a losing battle which wastes resources, year after year.

This is a good point, but Trump and his minions simply do not have the brain power to even conceive of such a notion.

Your preferred leadership likes killing foreigners in foreign countries ........ that's your moral conviction.

Kill thousands with carpet bombing, then save a few with vaccines.

Essentially, what you're promoting is the medical version of vaporware.  Does that Gates Foundation have a vaccine that's ready to go?

Wellcome and the Gates Foundation to Fund Late-Stage Development of a Tuberculosis M72 Vaccine Candidate That Could Be the First in 100 Years If Proven Effective

https://www.gatesfoundation.org/ideas/media-center/press-releases/2023/06/funding-commitment-m72-tb-vaccine-candidatepp

Maybe you have some news that Wellcome and the Gates Foundation haven't shared with the rest of us yet?

In fact, there currently isn't an approved vaccine effective enough to do the job. So until that happens, what's your plan?
